Hi Guys:

Took your advice and loosened off the starter--shook till I could shake no more. Still stuck.
Proceeded to work more on the start and have it ready to remove. I can now see the ring gear and it is not moving when rocking it in forth.
Remove the plugs and added generous amounts of WD40 (tractor has not run since the last snow fall).
Towed it in fourth, but tires only skidded on the grass.
Is there something that I have overlooked, or did the engine seize over the summer????

Thanks again for all your input.

Herby it is simple to know for sure if the starter is stuck or not. If you can't get the starter out of the hole in the clutch housing then it is stuck. Remove the oil filter if necessary to take the shell of the starter off and then if the armature is still stuck tight into the ring gear you definately have a stuck starter gear. Give the armature a few good whacks with a brass hammer or rubber mallett on the side of the big part of the armature and that may break it loose.

Lots of times it is a bad flywheel ring gear that has caused it to stick but not necessarily. I have seen starters stick with a new ring gear and it put on right. If that starter gear hits the ring gear just right it can stick. The gear teeth climb up on top of the other gear for some reason I don't understand but I do know it can happen with a perfectly good ring gear. It may be that the fit of the starter gear is too loose on the Bendix or something. I would replace the starter drive gear when you get it off to try to prevent it happening again soon.

Look closely at the teeth on the ring gear where the engine is stopped as soon as you remove the starter and see if the flywheel ring gear teeth seem to be worn off on that one spot. The problem with any engine is that it will stop at the exact same place nearly every time the engine is shut down and that makes that spot be worn a lot more than the rest.

Herbie..... ...I wouldn't expect to see the flywheel ring gear move iff'n it were starter gear stuck. Rocking a stuck flywheel just momentarily releases the pressure on the starter gear and allows the starter spring to "retract" the stuck gear. You might be able to "feel-itt" with your finger but NOT see-itt.

There are OTHER causes of draggin' rear wheels, most notable the tranny shifter getts stuck in 2-gears at 1-time. You'd haffta remove the 8N tranny topcover to check..... ....Dell

Hello Dell:

If the tranny is stuck in two gears, will it still go into neutral?

Thanks

Herbie

Herbie,
Nope, won"t go into neutral. In fact, the shifter won"t move. Also, your wheels wouldn"t turn even with the clutch disengaged.

It goes into neutral and disengages.
Must be something else

Thanks again

Take starter off tractor and try pulling. Also (hehe) are the brakes locked or seized?

So you have removed the whole starter? Not just the outter shell right?

Hard to believe that a 'ran when parked' engine could sieze in one year, as long as it had oil and plugs in it.

Try adding MMO down the spark plug holes and let that set. The wd40 may have washed past too fast if it found a broke ring.. etc.

Have you checked to ensure the rear end isn't frove up? Will the wheels spin when shifted to neutral

That's going to be why the starter is stuck. A worn ring gear. If that's the problem you want it fixed so it won't happen again.
