What to do with my distributor?

Hello,
I have a '48 8N with front mount distributor. I have had problems with the distributor in the past and have seen them worsen this weekend.
I was noticing some missing, and diminished power, so thought I'd check the points. The rotor was broken, the points almost completely closed, the slop of the shaft forward and backward had worsened and there is a larger crack spreading away from the tang on the back cover. The timing adjustment plate screw is stripped and won't hold the plate in one place. I put new points and rotor on, re-installed and now I get nothing when trying to start. Is this one just shot? I have been looking on ebay and see one new for about $180, I would buy used if in good shape, but I'd hate to just buy another problem. What do you think?
Thanks John

If your cam and weights are good.....you can replace the dist. base for 58.00 and a new breaker plate for 35.00....about half the cost of a new one. don

Donb, Thanks for the reply,
How can I tell if the cam and weights are OK? I don't see anything about that in the FO-4. I've found a used one for $100 plus shipping, so I may go with souNdguy's advise, but still not sure. If a rebuild was possible, I'd probably lean that way.
Thanks to all,
John

Your distributor has been treated pretty rough.
That crack has to be becaused it was installed wrong. It only goes in one way (not two ways) and it slips together when it's line upped right. If it doesn't slip in place and you have to pull it to the engine with the two mounting bolts it's wrong and costs $180+ to fix.

Yeah Rob, I knew that it only went in one way, says so very clearly in the FO-4. The crack has been there since I purchased it and it is slowly worsening.

I agree with souNdguy;

I would consider that distributor worn out and would look for a good used one. A good used one plus a rebuild kit should make one as good as new. If you went to a junkyard and are familiar with timing the front mounts, I'd try to time it out there so you could tell if the centrifugal weights/advance were worn whicn is a maker/breaker there.

May also try the Smith's page and see if he has any used distributors. There's enough of them out there and they're easy enough to rebuild to where I would not lay out the expense for a new one, personally.

Sounds like it is heading towards worn out.

While.. if you were a handy tinkerer.. you could probably refurb that one.. I think I'd look for a good used or new one to get myself going.. and then play with the old one... Cracks can be stopped.. stripped threads can be bushed/tapped..or welded / brazed and tapped... etc... just depends on your level of tolerance for tinkering, how fast your wallet is.. and how soon you want the tractor back.
