I have 52 8n, 6v pos grnd. Generator was rebuilt. From generator Iam getting 7.2 volts when measuring from armature to ground with volt meter. With engine off I get 6.2 volts from battery. With engine running and measuring voltage on battery, my voltmeter goes crazy and cant get correct volt readings. I tried measuring voltage on VRegulator. From arm to gnd and get 7.2 volts. Is my VR working correctly. Why do I get unreadable voltage from battery when engine running. Thanks

Dell is right. You need a VREG. Once again, analog triumphs over digital. You can't beat a simpson 260 analog VOM in the field ( as long as you have a big enough toolbox )and for voltage and current measurements, no batteries needed. I wish I still had my Radio Shack analog meter from high school.

SS..... ....congratulations, you have accurately diagnosed a BAD voltage regulator. Replace it and don't forget to polarize your new voltage regulator.

The reason your digital voltmeter seems to be acting crazy is the voltmeter ARM to BATT cut-out relay is chattering from bad relay pivot points. Your DVM has a "peak" voltage detector. Chattering points give various voltage reading and your meter is trying to keep up reading each chatter.

Your genny is good because you read about 7.2 volt at the genny ARM to ground. Your battery is good because you read about 6.2 volt with the engine/genny NOT RUNNING. Iff'n yer Voltage/Regulator was "good", you'd read about 7.2 volts at the battery when the engine was running and charging your battery (which you don't)..... ....Dell

I am a little confused. Are the crazy readings I am getting from My meter from the bad Voltage regulator chatter or because of interference from sparkies and stuff. FYI. My ammeter shows little or no amps.

SS..... ..iff'n it was a digital meter problem, you'd find that your genny ARM reading while running would cause irratic digital voltmeter readings. Itzchur voltage regulator. CHANGE IT..... ..Dell

And yes, some digital volt meters DVM or DMM are more sensitive to sparkies than others and that the meter leads can act as antennas. Remember the first radio transmitter by Marconi was a "spark-gap" transmitter..... .....Dell

Running engine drives modern digital volt meters crazy -- one of the 'lectrical sperts will tell you why.... voltages you did get look OK to me.

A .o1uf ceramic capacitor 50 volt or so(radio shack)across the leads at the meter should eliminate the interference. The leads act as an antenna and the digital dudes have 10x the input resistance of the old analog plus are more sensitive, which together makes them go nuts from sparking generator brushes. Your numbers look good however.
