Purchased a 52 8N and have had it for about a year now. Last fall and all summer it has been running rough after a half hour of work under load. Trying to elimate some things, pulling choke out does not seam to help. Still runs at idle very good. Anything above idle it seams to be starving for fuel and coughs like the choke is on. Is this a fuel problem. I have noticed debris in the sediment bowl and empty often. Any ideas where a novice should start. I also wondered if it is the tar in the coil. PS I am very greatful for this forum.
Thanks

might want to check the valves for carbon build-up
might also check spark plugs for fouling and recheck air gaps for correctness. these are commonly overlooked. yet because of todays substandard fuels it is easy to foul plugs. you might try lessening the gap by a couple thousands and see if that helps. i have been turning wrenches since i could hold onto my dads 8"crescent wrench.

While poor spark could be a problem.. If you can see debri in your fuel bulb.. and see it near empty.. I'd deffinately check the filter in the tank.. maybee even blow some compressed air back into the tank to clear debri from the screen.

Trash might have already made it to the jets.. a quick cleaning wouldn't hurt.

Check that elbow strainer too.

The one on my jubilee disintegrated before i knew it.

Rex,
Sound is right, I must have been skimming and missed the part about your sediment bowl being dirty and empty. I have had that happen a couple of times too. Haven't gone so far as to clean my tank, though.

I had a similar problem, and it ended up being the main jet was clogged. I sprayed canned carb cleaner through the jet with the straw the opposite direction of gas flow. Don't even need to remove the main nozzle, as the straw fits inside. Might as well hit all your jets and passages while you're in there. Wear eye protection, trust me on this.

Good luck,
Dan

The original ignition switch is notorious for going bad and only making partial contact when on.

Try adding a jumper wire between the two connecters on the switch to see if that cures it.

Like the guys said too be absolutely sure that you are getting a good flow of gas to the carburetor and that it is clean at the bottom of the carburetor and the spray nozzle is clean and clear.

I'd start with points and plugs, sounds like weak spark or poor timing to me.
Good luck.

The first thing I would do is clean all (I believe it's 3) fuel filters. Next I would clean the gas tank. And finally I'd clean out the carb. Take it off the tractor and drop the bottom bowl - don't worry - an 8N carb is about as complicated as a shovel. Do all this and if it still runs bad start looking at the electrics.
