It starts well in the AM and runs smoothly. It does work. It does not heat up or cough. But if I switch it off after an hour or so, then it will not restart for hours!! Bob

If you have a ballast resistor check that as well. It should be on the back side of the dash under that amp meter. I had the same problem and after changing everthing else electrical with out success I changed the resistor and it cured the problem. I think the resistance of this unit chages after the tractor runs for a while.

123qse..... ..there are 4-common runtime issues with the squarecan 4-nipple frontmount engine that will restart after a long time period to cool off.

1) runs for about 1 minute and quits; bad condenser; not your stated problem
2) runs for about 5 minutes and quits; clogged fuel filters; not your stated problem
3) runs for about 15 minutes and quits; gunked up ignition switch gutts; not your problem
4) runs for about 1 hour and quits; restarts after cooling off overnite; sound like your problem?

BAD SQUARECAN IGNITION COIL. The insulative tars have melted and shorted out some of the coil windings. After the tar gets cooled and hardend, will restart and run for about 1 hr again. Unfortunately, the frontmount squarecan ignition coil is not as robust as we'd like'm to be and once the tar melts, it'll always give you problems..... ..... Dell, the self-appointed sparkie-meister

I have a similiar problem. Someone suggusted that I install a resistor because I"m sending too much voltage to the coil and cooking the points. I converted my 8N (side mount) to 12 volt. The coil that I used (donated) says to "use with external resistor", which I don"t have. After reading your response I"m wondering if I should buy a new coil that dosen"t require a external resister. This DC electric is a bit of a mistery to me. How much voltage should be going to the coil after starting? How much resistance(ohms) would be needed to accomplish that if it"s necessary?
