Scott, I had the same problem along with other problems with my carb, rebuilt the carb 2 times in 8 yrs that I have had the tractor. It worked for a short while but never would run that good, although I thought I did, the air adjustment never did really adjust properly .I happened to looking on Ebay and noticed a brand new replacement for not much more than a hundred dollars, I bought it (new) and you wouldn't believe the difference, I now got a brand new tractor. My property is on mountain side , the driveway drops 20 feet or more in 150 feet, before I replaced the carb , to get out my driveway I used to put the tractor in 1st gear at about 3/4+ throttle now, I put the tractor in 3rd gear and lowest point on the throttle, now idle out the driveway without any effort. I then realised the carb is 54 years old and well worn, I retired the old carb, gave it to friend for his tractor for parts. Now I got a brand new tractor, I don't have to turn off my shutoff anymore, but if I am leaving it for a long time I turn it off just to ease the pressure. Invest the money for a new one, well worth the value. Stan

Wire won't tell you it's open. in reply to scottg, 09-24-2004 14:13:22

That just tells you you can poke wire in there. The idle air passages are too small (less than 1/16" dia.) and make too sharp a turn for any wire to go in one end and come out the other. I clean 'em and then blow air in one end and feel if it comes out the other. Very tricky and nuanced work, by the way.
Did you know there are seven ports (not counting the Discharge Nozzle) opening into the throttle throat area of that carb upper body? All of them must be clean and open for it to work right.
I'm posting a picture of the lower carb body and near the center is a little shiny brass jet (one of the seven ports) in the Nozzle Air Bleed passage that does not show up on the parts list and is not something that comes in the kit. I'm not talking about that brass tube which is the Discharge Nozzle but it has to be removed and the 4 tiny holes in its side need to be cleaned. Do you have that brass jet in your carb? Is your Discharge Nozzle clean?
Guy claims his idle wouldn't work on his one carb that didn't have the Nozzle Air Bleed jet but when he used another lower carb body with the jet the carb adjusted fine.

I had problems like this....i wish i could say once....but I;d be lying....but it turned out to be air leaking past that silly little rubber gasket on the throttle plate control shaft. Well, that plus a badly mis-adjusted fuel jet. Lets just say, two wrongs do not make a right in carb. adjustments either!!!

Scott..... ...900 rpms is when the MAINJET provides all the gas to run on, it don't provide nuttin below 900 rpms which is why it won't idle under 900 rpms unless you CHOKE which is providing gas BELOW 900 rpms.

BOTTOM LINE..... your idlejet is CLOGGED SOMEWHERE. cleaner again. Make certain you are installing your floatbowl gasket correctly, it may seem symmetrical, but it is NOT..... ..Dell
