I have a ( I think ) 48 8n and a manual that I copied from my neighbor that pictures a distributor that looks nothing like mine. the one in the manual shows the condenser inside with the points, and the one off my tractor mounts on top of the distributor just below the coil.
Is it possible the manual is showing a side mount, while I have a front mount?
Also looking for any pictures or copies from anyones manual that shows what I have.
I am having trouble getting a spark at the plugs, I do have power at the bottom of the coil. could it be so simple as to be a bad condenser?
please help!!

Randy..... ...count the distributor cap nipples. 4-nipples = frontmount distributor with squarecan ignition coil clipped to top of distributor with the condenser under the coil in the top of the distributor. (points gap = 0.015")

5-nipples = sidemount distributor with condenser inside the round distributor body with the points and a separate 2-terminal 1-nipple roundcan ignition coil. (points gap = 0.025")

HTH..... ...Dell, the self-appointed sparkie-meister

Randy. 9N-2N's serial #1 (1939) to 258504 (1947) and the model numbers all start with 9N. Starting with serial #1 in 1947 through 442035 (1952) the model #'s started with 8N. Check yours to find out what you have. Also take off the front mount as stated by the guy below and work on it on your work bench. Good luck. Ron

If it is a front mount job, it could be a couple things. Might be a cracked copper strip.. or even a shorted cap.. closed up points.. or points that don't close.

Front mount gap is .015

That distribuitor comes off with 2 bolts.. easy job. Only goes back in one way unless you use a hammer.
