Can anyone tell me the normal orientation of the oil fill hole and spring cap on an 8N 6-volt generator? Should it be up to hold the oil in or laying on its side like mine is?

The common sense position is cap towards the sky. There is an old Generator ID book floating around the rebuilder's world that shows the oil cap on the bottom and the wick on the top of a 9N generator, but who says the guy taking the pics ever oiled a tractor? Dell is right as to the single hole on the bottom of the 8N10001 field case so a tab from the side dist genny mount will locate the genny. For front dist gennys, the rear bracked will only go on in one place, but like I said above, some folks can put them on 180 degrees out of position

Front mount it will be at 1-o'clock or later in reply to jiminoystercreek, 09-26-2004 11:47:29
Side mount it will be 11-o'clock or so.
Those genny mounts are indexed so unless it was ham-fisted forced in there you don't have anything to figure out. Just assemble it to the index and it will be right. Depends on the belt and stuff.
