My 8n hydraulic lift lever seems to be spring-loaded. Often, when I pull it up to lift the blade, the lever will drop over halfway down on its own, and the blade drops down also, although not all the way to the ground. I recently posted another problem with the hydraulics that may be related(and I haven't fixed), which is, the hydraulic lift arms won't go all the way down, with or without equipment attached. What may be the problem, and how will I fix it? It is a 1949 8n, and otherwise a real good little tractor.

The touch control handle has a friction clutch that must from time to time be tightened a little so it has some resistance to the movement of the handle. Sometimes the friction disc will disentergrate and be lost too. When this happens the outer disc which is aluminum must be pulled off so a new one can be installed. This can be a bit of a problem since the aluminum grows to the steel shaft and does not easley come off. It usully take an acetylene torch to heat it enough to get it to turn loose. It will melt if too much heat is applied.

I have a jig and booklet that needs to be used to correctly adjust the 8N lift the first try.

Mine does the opposite. If lowered all the way, the quadrant control lever will sneak up on its own. One fix is to tighten or repace the friction disk. Tighten it by removing the kotter pin and tightening the nut a little and replacing the kotter pin.

I was planning on doing this, but the zane thang I installed took care of the problem, as well as giving me excellent position control for the three point hitch. Anybody with a 9N or a 2N using above ground implements (mower, grading blade, hoist) should consider getting one. Thanks ZANE!

I had a similar problem with my 49 when it got real cold and I hadn't run it for a while. Best I could figure is the water in the hydraulic fluid seperated out and froze in the bottom interfering with normal lift arm movement and function. When the weather warmed and I was using the tractor more frequently, the problem went away. I'm waiting for a break in the weather (May?) to change hyd fluid. HTH Steve 8N 169302
