As you all know, I recently got my two new 8N's out on my property. I just built a new 20' X 20' steel storage building with a concrete floor for tractor storage, I painted the floor with epoxy yesterday for easy oil spill cleanup. I mowed all day with my 1952 workhorse, and parked it under my lean-to overnight so the paint could dry in my new storage house. This morning, I started it up to move it and it ran for abould 2 minutes and died. I could not get it to restart. Finally got the starter fluid out and shot it in the air cleaner and got it to run for a second - ok, I know electrical is good. Then I pull the plug on the bottom of the carb - three drops, ok now I know there is no fuel to my carb. Thinking my sediment bowl filter is plugged, I turn the knob all the way and WHOOLAA, gas starts coming out my carb drain. I smack myself on the head, I got down to my last gallon and needed more gas. OK, this is indeed embarrasing, but notice the great troubleshooting I did to figure the problem out - and I learned it here. Thanks all.

Dan

My old man is notorious for starting them up, driving 15 feet, and then scratching his head about what's wrong when it dies. Fuel valve every time. I usually don't forget it or know what's up just as soon as it starts to stumble, but I fall victim to the same stupid move every time I work on a distributor. Change the points or whatever, button it up and cuss at it for an hour because it won't start. And then I see the rotor laying on the fender or the running board. DUH! Happens every time.

And you think your the oly person to try to start a tractor that is out of gas? or with the gas turned off? or with the ignition off?

Heck.. I had my 2n at a show and nearly killed the battery trying to start it.. when I looked down and the key was off... go figure..

Like some of the others have mentioned it won't start with the keyswitch off either...duh !!! Been there, done that too. Just normal brain farts I guess !!! Later, Lee

50 years on N's and I can still manage to do that.
"It had lots of gas when I checked it BEFORE the last time that I used it."
Somehow the key also manages to turn itself off, once in awhile.
You have lots of company.

Is that your workhorse? I"d call that my parade tractor. Very nice.

The thing about starting fluid, is that an engine can start on it without a spark. The compression in the cylinders is enough to detonate it.

Take care,
Bill

Notice I said "just" got them down to my property. I am sure after a few months it won't looks quite as nice. I had initially got a 1948 8N to do this work, but mission creep set in and before I knew it I was $3k in parts, several hundred hours in labor, and a nice air sprayed paint job on it. No way could I use it to brush hog so now it is my trailer queen deligated to hay wagon pulls and the such :) I had to find myself a nice running 8N with excellent hydraulics to do that work - at least that is what I told my wife. Anyway, while it was sitting in my garage for a few months while I fixed a misground valve seat and a few other minor issues, I couldn't help myself to spruce it up a bit. But, I knew all along it would be my work horse, so it is a rattle can paint job with importance to the radiator, engine, and hydraulics and such.

Thanks for all the compliments and support. I feel like 8N Annonimous...
Dan

Just think if it was a Harley how long you would have kicked started it and how far you would have pushed it befor you found out the fuel valve was closed

Never left the gas off in 28 years of the Harley, but I did do it on the 2N once. On the Harley, it just becomes habit. I shut mine off even if I'm stopped long enough to get gas.

I know some guys that have done it on the bike though, one even has a sticker on his windsheild that says, "Turn the gas on, Dummy!"

If it were a Harley, you would have slipped and fell on the oil slick way before the heart attack.

Boy, when I got done with the mechanical aspect of my 2N restoration, we took it outside and had to jump it to get it to start (tight new engine). We went all around that thing for about 45 minutes trying to get it to start because we routinely forgot to either open the fuel valve, or turn the ignition switch on...it was always one or the other and they kept alternating. There was a lot of forehead slapping that day! You are not alone....

It does take some to get used to that valve. in reply to Dan, 09-26-2004 20:04:19
Feel good about the troubleshooting though. It's pretty nice to know how to approach the old gal though isn't it? You'd be quicker to check that valve it you used it more. I use it all the time. I don't top off my tank. I routinely 'run out of gas', reach over and open the valve, and only then go back to the barn to refuel. I've got to where I remember what to do when she first stumbles and I can get the valve open before she dies...sometimes; a guy can open it from the seat.
I believe that's the way to go so the fuel is more fresh, the valve and the tank bottom gets flushed and I know it will work if I really get out there and need it, and now you give another reason; so I remember to open it at all.

done that too, i always turn the valve off when i leave the tractor so gas doesnt flod the engine if the float were to stick for some reason, but 1 time i cought c.r.s., and forgot to turn it back on, for those interested a N carb bowel caries just exactly enough gas for you to get the tractors front wheels up on your trailer , with the rears still on the ramp, it will then shut down and lurch to a stop and try to run backwards down the ramp for a few feet. this will be folowed by hoots , laughter and smart alec remarks from any old men farmers around who know exactly what you just did and theres no cool way out of that situation either [ grin], thanks, ericlb
