Is there a big difference between early model 8N and late model 8n?

I know the distributors are different...front vs. side, any issues regarding this other than location and ability to work on.

Thanks.

Not sure if you are asking about the distributor or the entire tractor. Another item that was upgraded was the reverse speed. At some point in time it was decided to lower the speed of reverse. Something that is handy if you are pushing snow.

SC..... ...well, they did change the 8N's steering gearbox at s/n 216989 (mid-49) and added the governor driven Proofmeter at s/n 290271 (mid-50) and changed to a left mounted 20amp 6-volt genny when they changed to right sidemount 5-nipple distributor at s/n 263844 (mid-50)..... but other than adding embossed script Ford to the rear fenders (no record), the guttz of the 4-speed 8N stayed the same for its entire production run from mid-47 to end-52. And except for "braggin' rights" and property tax purposes, don't matter much when yer 8N was built 50 years ago..... ..respectfully, Dell

Yes. The "innards" are different and are arranged differently. Just look at the difference in the size of the housings, not to mention internal coil on the front versus external coil on the side mounts. I can't speak for much more than that as I am not all that familiar with the side mounts.
