OK, so I knew when I moved out here into this old house in the country that I would encounter a certain amount of wildlife, but this is the LAST straw. The coons in the attic were a bit of a nuisance and the little ones climbing the fir tree outside the back door were actually kind of funny, but that didn't bother me. The birds and the bat flying around my living room were even a little humorous after I got them out and finally found the hole under the eave where they were getting in. The several dozen rabbits and groundhogs rooting up my yard and clipping off my little trees were easily handled with my trusty .22. And the little baby skunk I found wandering around my front yard this spring was even kinda cute. But this has gone too far. I got out of the truck after work this morning and the first thing that hit me was skunk musk. No big deal until I got in the house. OH MY GOD!!! I think one of those ^%$^%$!!! things got under my house and sprayed. It's unbearable in here! Anybody know what to do to get rid of the stench and permanently dissuade skunks from hanging around here? I've been wanting to get a dog and that's a great big 10-4 now, but what to do in the meantime? TIA!

Vent on your rip off dealer and don"t give him any money. He deserves the skunk. We had a skunk in our house. Animal control came over and put a bullet in its head and in our wall. when they left they left a bloody mess, dead carcass and brain splatter on our fresh painted walls. Opening all the doors and windows (on a winter night) did not get rid of the odor. We tried every trick suggested to us. The one that seemed to help, and only slightly, was lighting a newspaper and blowing it out. we filled the house with smoke from the newspaper. when the smoke aired out the smell had decreased. We still had skunk odor in the house however, for several weeks.

Joe, don't think for one second that if you called the dealer the next day and said you didn't want the truck he'd buy you out of it. Tell him to call whoever he needs to call. With the skunk problems you have you don't need any crap out of him.

Meanwhile, I'm eaten up with possums and I've been complaining about it. I think I'll stop now and count my lucky stars.

Getting a dog will only make the problem worse- dog barks at skunk under house, skunk sprays dog in the face, dog comes out howling and pawing at eyes. So your house is no less skunked than it was before Bowser, but now you gotta take care of a skunked dog, too. Only saving grace with dogs and skunks is that unless the dog is a complete idiot, he will learn to keep his yap shut and give them a wide berth after a couple of encounters. Thanks for the help, guys. I'll check into a few of those things. I live 100 yards across the road from the railroad and they came through and clearcut the jungle growing along the tracks last week. Since then, I've been ventilating groundhogs and rabbits daily. But THIS is something else all together!

I really didn't need this right now. I've got a production supervisor at work trying to get me fired because I refuse to babysit his incompetent, poorly trained machine operators, my girlfriend shacked up with another guy a week ago because I refused to knock her up before we got married, I can't get access to any cash because an ATM machine ate my card yesterday after she cleaned me out and closed the account, and right after I found out about the skunk thing, the dealer I bought my new truck off of last Monday called and said they noticed that the bed on my trade-in has been replaced and they are going to turn me in to the state for misrepresenting it unless I come up there and buy them out of it. Mayhap I should forget the four legged critters and start plugging holes in some two-legged ones instead. OK, I'm done now. Sorry, but GOD does it feel good to vent!!!

An individual does not give any warranty of goods to a dealer what a car/truck is traded in. I expect the dealer took looksee at your truck while your were test driving the new one or while you were drinking coffee at the salesman's desk. This was there chance to inspect your vehicle and make a determination on its value. Looks like they dropped the ball if they really care about a switched bed. Who really cares anyway? If they are upset they don't think they can sell the truck off their lot, they'll end up wholesaling out to a fly-by-night cheapo dealer. That should be no big deal to them since they do it all the time for cars in poor condition.

Tell the dealer to screw off.

All that bad crap happening and you still had the goodness in you to post for help with my AWOL N.
Thanks for that. If the dealership did not inspect the vehicle properly prior to closing the deal, that's their problem. What would they say if the tables were turned. Wait for a good woman. There out there.
Cover your a$$ at work. If he doesn't have the authority to fire you directly then he should watch out for you. Don't tattle (not cool) but be ready with ammo for a confrontation with his supervisor. Maybe your job is not the one in real jeopardy. Maybe his?
Hope things improve for you from here. Eric

don't know about the skunk but I would tell the car dealer to bite me. He is a dealer and therefore you being a private individual it should be buyer beware. He should have checked the vehicle and why would a bed change get you in trouble? It has no VIN numbers, unlike changing the cab with VIN which would be a no-no.

I had the exact same thing happen to me. A skunk got underneath the house and sprayed. Here is what we did: Went to Petsmart and got some spray (I forget the name), but it has a skunk on the front of the bottle. It will take the skunk smell out of anything you spray it on. We basically bought several bottles of this stuff, and the entire family started spraying everything. The good news is that the skunk smell will eventually go away. The stuff at Petsmart will speed up the process greatly. And the spray itself does not smell bad. We sprayed furniture, clothes, bedding, carpets, suitcases, ... I mean nearly everything. A few days later, no more skunk smell at all. We had to make a barrier around the bottom of the house to keep the skunks out. We dug a trench about 8-10" deep around the house. We then stapled small chicken wire to some decorative lattice. We nailed up the chicken wire covered lattice around the house inside the deep trench. Covered up the trench. We have had a few critters try to dig underneath, but so far they have all given up because the reach the chicken wire. Note: Don't use lattice alone. I hear it actually can attract skunks because they see it as a protection from their predators. Skunks can easily go through the lattice alone. That is why we used the chicken wire staple gunned to it. Good luck. Get that "skunk-away" stuff at Petsmart, it works.

My uncle had the same problem. His son-in-law (my cousin's husband), the know-it-all said the plan would be to toss in some anhydrous ammonia in one opening under the house and have a firing squad ready to dispatch them as they came out the other end.

The problem was he used TOO MUCH and the skunks never made it to the exit. They died under the house. The fumes from the ammonia were so strong no one could get near the house for weeks. My uncle says after a couple of weeks he walked up to the house, opened the door and woke up laying in the front yard. He knew then he had to wait for a few more weeks!

Oh man..you are doomed. in reply to Joe (IN), 09-29-2004 06:51:52
One of em got under there an died maybe. You gotta keep your house tight so they can't do that. Maybe he's under the porch, they like porches. Get in there and get him out, sooner the better. Oh boy...
Don't shoot skunks! Not anywhere near the house and not up wind for sure. I see one walking through the yard I just hope like you no what he keeps on walking! Treat for grubs if you want but clean up your property and mow.
A dog will chase off the skunk but come back smelling so you don't want him back. I got rid of the weed patch and the skunk disappeared. What happened is he was a-courtin up on the county road and they both got run over! Not too smart that. Glad I don't live closer to the road. One shows up now and again but they move on if they don't find it homey. Keep your property cleaned up, mowed, and where they can't get under anything. Now's the time, winter's coming and the mice and rats are going to be coming indoors any day now.

Contact a local company that cleans up smoke/fire damage. They have a machine called an 'ozone generator'. As long as the source (skunk)has left it should completely neutralize the odor in a day or two. Run it until you can't smell the odor anymore. I would run first under the house to get rid of the source than inside. Have used them to clear up a lot of strange/obnoxious odors, but haven't used for skunk spray. Your house will smell spring time fresh just like after a thundershower.

That's good advice on the mothballs. i've used them to chase away many types of critters.

If it is a grub feed / forage issue.. spread out some dursban / diazanon granuals to kill the food source off.

Try a pet store like petsmart and ask for a biological/enzymatic type cleaner. I've seen many that claim to neutralize skunk musk / cat spray, as well as urine/feces odors.

good luck!

I can't help you with the smell but the skunk is probably hanging around because you have grubs in your soil. Skunks love grubs. Verify this by looking for small areas dug up. If this is what you find the best way to keep them away is treat your grass with grub killer. If the skunk has made a home somewhere close, you may end up encouraging him/her to leave (or die) with the trusty 22.

Joe,

I had shunks under an outbuilding. I threw a bunch of mothballs under the outbuilding and I haven't seen the skunks since. I not sure if the mothballs did it or they decided to leave on their own. But they are gone!

Good luck,
Danny

skunks do not like mothballs, i got rid of mine that way, a lady down the street paid me to live trap hers, i live traped 9 of the little buggars from her place[ she was a summer only resident and the skunks just loved the free rent for the winter] i always gave them a nice ford blue paint dot on their side just to make sure i didnt have the same animal. when you live trap them, this is the way i did it and survived, as you set up the cage, put it where you can get to it, then put a old tarp folded in 3 peices over it fold the sides up on top of the cage , when the skunk is in it you can take a hoe or rake and unfold the sides then you won't get sprayed, now you'll have a perfectly good , used skunk, youll have to decide if your ex or the dealer best deserves the new pet.spray amonia lightly around the house also helps keep them away from your place, the truck should not be a problem, they take in all kinds of trades, as a last resort tell them the truck had a commercial body on it and you just put a stock pickup bed back on it, no harm done to the truck my 2 cents worth, ericlb
