Hi guys , I left work early today for some seat time, bushhogged a couple acres all seemed fine then I stopped on a grade and my 52 8n wouldnt move in reverse .No bad noises no jerking no nutin ! Forward gears seemed ok so I moved to level ground, I could back up then but no power on a incline, had to make 3 trys and get a running shot to back into the barn .I have only had tractor 4 months so I dont have a clue about clutch ect. So is it tractor splitting time in ole Kentucky ??Any general checks that might clue me in ?? Thanks in advance for your input. This is my favorite site on the web. Roy

Roy, check your brakes. in reply to Roy n Ky, 10-01-2004 17:28:09
Back around on level ground a bunch and then check the brake drums for hot. If they are hot your brakes are dragging in reverse.

Engage your PTO shaft, and watch it rotate while you engage the clutch to try to move.

If the PTO shaft spins, apparently up to speed, and you're not moving, it's NOT the clutch.

Will the tractor move at normal speed in 3RD and 4TH gears, or is there clutch slippage there?

(Reverse faster than 1ST, and maybe even second, so reverse would take more torque delivered through the clutch than 1ST, and possibly even 2ND.)

Can you feel "free travel" when you first depress the clutch?

I'd suggest taking the top off the tranny, and seeing what's wrong, before resorting to a drastic move like breaking the tractor! See what's wrong, then decide just how to fix it! Hopefully, it will turn out to be something simple! I hope, hehehe! Do you have the dreaded fo-4 manual?? Useful trouble-shooting tool!

I don't know nuttin about trannies, but I know a little about clutches. I really doubt a clutch would only slip in reverse, but I could be wrong.
