OT - Discing w/ 9N

I think I need some discs to level out some ground. The soil is great black dirt but it has small stones and some wood chunks in it. I am talking about 2+ acres that need leveling. My thoughts are to leave about a 1/2 acre for a large garden and the rest will be seeded & strawed.

My problem is that I know nothing about discing. What can a 9N handle? Do I need a harrow too or are multiple passes with discs enough to re-seed? I suspect my garden area will need lots of tilling work but I know that is not a job for my 9N.

Any thoughts or advice is much appreciated. Thanks.

My 8n pulls a 6' disc fine.

Even though a disc generally only hits 2-4".. you can make multiple passes with it adt really get a nice powdered texture going.. just depends on how long ya got. Plowing first helps get some depth as well. Plows and discs handle vegitation fairly well.. but it you have tall standing weeds cut them first.

I think I would use a drag to prep for seeding after discing.. then after seeding, drag it again.

Peanut , without seeing your patch of ground , I see no reason your good running old N cant plow it ( 2 - 14 inch plows ) 5 or 6 ft discs should be no problem.

Peanut, I used to do a lot of disking. I have a bushhog and box blade, a disk is for me the next investment. A five footer would be your best size if it uses dual gangs.... Wider if you get single gangs... Your first disking, go half width, then disk a few more times at full width. Then, wait a week or two, and give one more pass...
When I was a kid, I used to follow the tractor a throw the sticks and rocks off to the side...
Hope that helps,
Adam

If it's just to plant, you would probably be better off with a York Rake with drop down ripper teeth. Otherwise, you will have to plow first, unless you have ground without vegetation.

Take Care

Thanks Steve.

The ground has a fairly thick layer of grass/weeds for vegetaition. It was a part of my property that was neglected for years before I bought it. I bush hog it every other week. I have started to notice fence-port sized chunks of wood surfacing. I pick axe them out and am left with ruts. I was thinking I would dig as much as I could out (wood chunks) this winter and start leveling lat winter/early spring. That way I have a nice garden for next year.
