Gents, does anyone have experience with installing a stack-tybe exhaust on a 1949 8N? is there a bracket i can buy to bolt on to support the upright pipe after it leaves the manifold? I don't want to cut or drill into the hood sheet metal so if i ever sell it I can re-install the pipe/muffler underneath the frame. THanks, Doug.

I got my verticle exhaust kit off of eBay. It included the brace and the rain cap.

I just happened to already have a hole drilled in the sheet metal of my hood that I used, although a head bolt/stud probably would work just as well (if not better)...

Anything to beat being gassed! in reply to Doug MO, 10-03-2004 20:46:12
That's what I need to do. Finally just started shutting down the tractor when having to go behind it. A 6 cyl puts out a lot more fumes than a 4 cyl!

Post a pic when you get through.

Re: 8N Funk 6 exhaust going UP in reply to MikeT , 10-04-2004 09:43:42
third party image

Besides the obvious joy of my life in this photo (daughter not tractor) this is my exhaust going up not down and back. I didn't make it this way... bought it this way. Hack job really, but I don't smell fumes.
Points to note: bailer wire holding stack on, manifold looks like a mirror image to normal one (think this was from a F4,5,6 truck), I think the 1 1/4 ID pipe is a little small for this engine.
Plan to change it in the future... maybe this christmas.
If I didn't attach pic correct... its on the pics on the left side of screen.

THanks for the info and that restored 8N is a beauty. I ordered a muffler set today from the local Tractor Supply for about $20. The manifold clamp is about $10 plus the rain cap for $8. THe total should come to about $40 when I get finished. According to the picture in the muffler parts manual, there is a bracket that extends over to the engine similar to the 8N photo in your attachment so now I know how it's supposed to attach. What brought this all on is that i have been pushing a lot of dirt in my back yard to install a culvert, and with backing up for another blade of dirt, i've been eatin' a lot of exhaust fumes - and I'm tired of it. I'll keep the old under exhaust around just in case i change my mind. when i get everything installed i'll let you all know how it went. Thanks! Doug.

It comes with a brace. in reply to Doug MO, 10-03-2004 20:46:12
The brace uses a headbolt. The stack mounts outside the hood. It's cheap and easy.
Get a rain cap for another $5. It's a $25 deal and takes a few minutes. It takes longer to remove the horizontal and it's clamp.

I haven't bought a vertical exhaust for years, but the ones that TSC used to sell came with a brace (strap) that clamped to the pipe under the muffler, and went to a cylinder head stud (bolt).

Anyone know if the strap is still included?

Doug,
One of the sponsors of this site sells a vertical exhaust. (Check the link.) I don"t know if it goes through the hood or not. It wouldn"t be anything unusual since quite a few people just get all upset when the hay field catches fire.
