Stuck clutch and grinding gears in reply to dave md, 10-04-2004 15:32:53
I've got a clutch on the bench. It wouldn't disengage and there is nothing wrong with the clutch. The shifter fork is pinned to the clutch release shaft but the shaft was wallowed out. I lost 1/2" travel in the throw-out bearing so the clutch never really disengaged. On top of that, the right end of the shaft and the bushing is worn so there is more slop there.
Symptoms would be that you can adjust the clutch any way you want but the clutch will not disengage or it drags causing grinding gears when shifting. That's backward from normal where you adjust when a clutch wears and starts slipping until all the adjustment is used up.
The fix is an engine/tranny split to repair or replace the $15 shaft and replace the $5 split bushing and $2 pin. Me, I'll probably bush the wallowed shaft and make a pin.

SHHH--Not uncommon for the clutch to rust, stick to the pressure plate and flywheel. Many folks block the clutch down to prevent the clutch from sticking. Search the archives for many 'fixes'. IMHO if you work 'em hard and put them away dry this won't happen. Only time I've had to deal with a stuck clutch was when the water rose and left an old ford pickup sitting in a few inches of water. We jacked it up, started it in gear, held the clutch down, gave it a little throttle and pushed it off the jack. Slipped the clutch a little bit and it was fine.

Zane it was hit by all three storms, a lot of damage done. Some buildings badly damaged. You can go to the Florida Flywheelers site and see photos. The Nov show will go on and it will be as good or even better than before. We had great shows there before any buildings we erected at times the display area and parking lot were just ungraded muddy fields but still the show went on and that was only a few short years ago!
