Lots of noise and smoke

I have a Ford 1710 diesel. While loading up on some firewood, the engine started making alot of noise like I blew a cylinder with a lot of smoke coming from the exhaust. The tractor acted like it was running on 2 cylinders. After shutting it down for a few minutes and looking stupidly at the engine, I fired it up and it ran fine for the rest of the day.

The only thing I did prior to this was to put in 5 gal of fuel, winter mix by me.

Water in fuel, bad injector?? Any ideas would be appreciated. I am new to diesels. Craig

It may have been an injector stuck open. When this happens there is no restriction of the amount of fuel that goes to that particular cylinder and the fuel is not atomized but rather squirted in raw. Hammer and smoke!!!!

Zane,

Sould I be looking for new injectors or is this something that happens sometimes?

Thanks
Craig

"If it ain't broke don't fix it"

As long as it is not doing anything wrong I myself would not touch it. If it does it again or does it and won't clear up then you should replace the one faulty injector not all of them. They are not like spark plugs that go bad as a rule. Injectors can last a really long time. Faulty ones do come along now and then though and then they have to be replaced.

Like SouNdguy said, I would check the fuel filter as well as the air filter. Both will affect the running of the engine.

As far as diesel engines being noisy and smoking, they are noisy and they do vibrate more than a gas engine. They sould not smoke badly if they are running properly (maybe a little under a load). However, the diesel does have more torque and uses less fuel per hour than a comparable gas engine. (my .02) Rick H. Ga.

I'd inspect your fuel filter and bowl.. might have water / sediment in it. Check the air filter too.. as the air filter plugs.. smoke gets blacker on diesels.

I always run a bit of power service in my diesels.. so far that's worked well for me.

Soundguy, What's "power service"? Fuel additive?.

Thanks,

Yep.. it is available at tsc and places like napa / car quest.

There are a few versions of power service.. some for gelling.. some for just injector cleaning / cetane issues.. etc.
