Tractor has not been running right with new carburetor, so out of curiosity I put the old one back on..and it runs noticeably better..I bought the new carb on ebay so I haven't tried to contact the seller yet. I hate to dig into a new carb because it should be ready to go out of the box other than the two adj screw settings..If I do look inside I am guessing float level adjustment..Any advice? How do you check and set the float level?? Thanks

It needs to be right. When you're done the float has to be level from the plunger right on out to the tip of the float so that means any bend has to be right up against the hinge.
Easy gauge is a 1/4" drill bit. Invert the carb body and set it on the table. Stick the bit under the end of the float and bend at the hinge to set the height. Get it at 1/4" then stick the bit up near the plunger. Go back and forth until you get it 1/4" and level.
Some have trouble with this because they can't stand finese and nuance which is required to make it come out right.

Gas was running out the bottom of the new one I bought from my local dealer The first thing I had to do, reset the float level.

I checked the float, cleaned it, blew it out(it wasn't dirty)Put it back on and old one still runs better..Something just isn't quite right inside it somewhere..Nothing to them inside so I can't understand where the problem could be..

There's more to the insides of those carbs than you think. There is at least one "hidden" passage, drilled down deep in the lower half, sideways from the main jet.

I just don't think the Far East knock-off guys got all the little details correct in some of these, and that's why I've cleaned up and repaired the original carbs, rather than take a chance on some of the no-name new units.

There have been complaints of some of the off-shore, generic replacement carburetors not being quite right.

To check the float level, disassemble the carburetor, invert the top half, and check for 9/32" of clearance between the float and the machined surface of the carburetor, measured at the end of the float farthest from the needle and seat.
