Help, Iam about ready to hang myself with my shoelaces. Was cleaning up oily clutch put in new trans. oil seal ect. was moving rear half of 8n and my jack slipped no injuries to me but bell houing fell about 15" hit concrete floor and cracked bottom of trans.about 5" in 2 places. In the area where it bolts up to engine, crackes run front to rear. I am just sick about it,what now ?Has anybody ever tried to weld up this casting ? Thanks Roy

Buy some 1/8" Certainium cast iron welding rods and grind out the cracks with a side grinder about half way through and weld it up.

Must be an accomplished welder but most good welders with a lot of experiance can do it. No sweat job!

The welder should have a reverse polarity DC capability. You can just reverse the leads on a 200 AMP Lincoln gasoline welder etc if it is DC and lacks a reverse switch.

I have fixed Caterpillar transmission housings where the final drive was broken when trying to force ice frozen tracks to move.

Thanks guys ,I think the shock is starting to wear off , although I don't feel smarter yet.I think I will see if I can replace the housing as the inside of my trans. still looks like new .Some days you get the bear and some days the bear gets you!! Roy

I have an 8N that has had the top of the bell housing flange welded back in, by a P.O., and it's never given trouble.

To do it properly, the casting should be stripped down, and cleaned and pre-heated before welding, and if you're gonna do all that, it might be just as well to find a good used casting, and swap the guts of your's over to the donor case.

Roy,

If you read the old post linked below you will find that you do not have to preheat to weld cast irom, but that you can "cold" weld cast iron IF you do it CORRECTLY. Cold welding is really the only choice for most of us because we do not have the facilities to uniformly heat large castings and them let then slowly cool. Hope you find the post interesting reading.

Regards,
Larry

Larry,

That bell housing flange is a structural part of the tractor, and I stand by may advice to replace it, and someone has found him a case at a reasonable price. Replacing it would be safer for him, and any subsequent owners of this tractor.
