Hi everyone, I have a 48 8N with a three brush, 3 terminal genny, it has had the third brush removed and is on a VR. All was well tell this weekend when I noticed I had no output. The gauge shows negative amps with lights on, so I figure the gauge is ok. Grounding the field terminal has no effect on the gauge reading. The brushes are making contact with the armature, but look as though they may be getting short. Can anyone tell me how long they should be? All else "looks" ok inside, anyone have an idea on where to go from here? I unfortunetly don't have any electrical test equiptment.

Ken: If grounding the field terminal doesn't make a difference, it HAS to be the genny. Since you already have a VR, and your tractor is late enough, go to NH and buy a 8N10000BLPR. You'll have the more modern 2 brush genny that's easier to service, easier to get parts for ( eastier to stealth to 12V too! ) and higher output. You might need to scrounge a bracket here or there, but I think you'll be happier in the long run.

Good Luck

I used the info on you web site to convert this genny to a two brush setup about a year or so ago, and it worked great till Sunday. I opened it up and cleaned the commuter and brushes real good, they seamed to be oily. Then reinstalled it. I must have fixed something because it's working fine again. Can you tell me more about the stealth 12V conversion?

New brushes usually an inch or more. in reply to Ken W, 10-12-2004 10:40:07
Surprisingly long when you're looking at the worn brushes.
They're usually ok until the spring can't push on them any longer. The spring hangs on the brush guide and can't push the brush into the commutator.

Keep in mind that the third brush style gennies are more of a b-circuit deal.. whereas our 2 brush gennies are a-circuit.

A-circuit gennies have an internally hot field, and the a-circuit regulator provides ground for the field. On a b-circuit genny.. the field is internally grounded, and the 3rd brush provides field power.. or in your case.. the b-circuit regulator provides field power.

If you have a test lite.. check out your field wireing.. even a visual inspection will probably tell you. If your field is grounded, then it needs power. Therefore grounding the filed terminal would have no effect whatsoever... ( though it would have on an a-circuit genny.. ).

Take your vom and measure the armature at hi idle.. it may be the cutout is stuck... also.. remove the field wire from the genny, and measure it to ground ( you are measuring the field tab on the reg ).. you should have power there.

Have you tried repolarizing?

About a week ago, I posted about a project using an old 3rd brush genny, removing the brush and wireing the genny up to a naa or hundred series regulator. Jim Cox posted in with some good advice and info.
