I have a '51 8n that seems to be putting out too much amperage. At any speed above idle the guage shows +30 amps. At idle it goes back down to about +10 or so. It has a new wiring harness, regulator, guage, battery cables and battery. I ran it for about four hours today to do some bush hogging and to fully charge the new battery but it still reads the same. By the way, it had these same indications before I changed everything. Are these reading normal?

Polarize it Mike. in reply to Mike 'n GA, 10-12-2004 14:58:24
Watch the ammeter go crazy for a minute when you start it after polarizing.
Normal is more like 8amps full out and 3amps usual.

Mike..... ...them readings ain't normal.

30 amps is the same as "full-fielding" your 8N's generator by grounding the field terminal. Iff'n yer miss-connected yer voltage regulator ground wire to the generator field terminal at the otherend of the wiring harrness, you will gitt MAX GENNY OUTPUT. (30 amps)

You did correctly re-wire your voltage regulator didn't you? The 2-skinny black wires, one is the FIELD (black with white tracer) which controls the genny output and the other is the regulator frame GROUND (black with red tracer) Check'em out

10 amps at idle is about all a generator at idlespeed will produce.

After changing all yer electrical stuff, did you remember to "re-polarize" your generator/voltage regulator? Everytime you change your squarecan voltage regulator, you need to POLARIZE. Just "arc-spark" your BATT & ARM terminals. The side-by-side BATT & ARM terminals have HEAVY yellow wires attached..... ....Dell
