I purchased a 9N at an estate auction,they said
it had been setting in a barn for 10 years. It ran at the auction but missed a little. After
insalling plugs ( the distributor, points, cap looked like new) it runs good but smokes quite
a bit.When it's warm there's a light smoke all
the time if you rev it up it really smokes for
a minute or two.I remove the breather cap and it
has no blowby, the smoke doesn't smell like oil.
Could bad gas do this? If the rings were bad
wouldn't it have blowby? The guy bought it new
and only farmed 27 acres. The steering wheel only has 1/4 of slop and the gears are tight as new.

Might be running way rich. in reply to Ray, 10-12-2004 15:17:42
Turn in (CW to lean) the main adjust on top front of the carb see if the smoke clears. You'll know right away. 1/4-turn might be more than enough, maybe 1/2...give it a try.
FYI: When you go to set up that carb you start at one-turn out. Usually ends up near 1-1/2 turn out maybe less. On a good engine, when you goose the throttle to 1/2 and the engine stumbles it's too lean, if it puffs it's too rich.

First, give her an oil change, then take her to the field hook up a hog and run her like you stole her! Give her a couple short oil changes(5-8 hours) and take another look at the problem. I say this because when I got my "46 2N it had sat for a long time the same as yours, she didn"t come back to life until I started putting her under a heavy strain for a few hours. Now don"t get me wrong, keep a real close eye on the oils and water level. If she has been sitting for 10 years you will likely encounter other problems like fuel tank sediments clogging the filters, bad connections in the wiring, so on and so forth. Don"t get frustrated we have all been there, and will give you the help you need! Happy "N"ing!

I would take a compression check just to see how things are. White smoke may just be a head gaskit. Mark H.

Blue smoke? White smoke? Black smoke?
Oil, water, fuel, in that order.

Don't forget that an overserviced oil-bath airfilter will smoke blue also.

It's kind of a white smoke that doesn't smell
like oil,I've removed the breather cap with it
running and it doesn't have any blowby, idle it
for a minute then rev it up and it really smokes.
Compression is 1-80 2-65 3-80 4-80.There is a light oil film in the radiator.
