While re-assembling the 8N I decided to go ahead & replace the original crank pulley w/ a new tapped pulley & coupler for future pump installation. To my dismay the pulley, coupler & shaft DID NOT come w/ a cap screw to replace the ratchet screw! Not to many hardware stores around here supply 5/8"x1"-fine thread cap screws. That size is usually course-thread & start @ 2".

Anyhow, I did find a 1 1/2" grade 5. Does anyone know if a 5/8"-grade 5 will take 150ft-lbs of torque? I guess I"ll soon find out. Hope that extra 1/2" will fit.

By the way, why don"t the tapped pulleys come w/ a cap screw? Seems like a $40 pulley would sell just as well at $42 w/ a screw included.

A 1" bolt is the right lenth for eather pulley. 1 1/8" would be nice but ya cannot find one and the time it takes to make one 1 1/8" is not worth the time. If you are going to run a front loader pump the bolt and washer will need to be modified to clear the pump shaft and pump shaft hub. Pulley # 192160 will not need a washer. Pulley # 192152 will need a harden washer that also will need to be turned down to fit the center of the pulley. If you are not going to run a front loader pump no modification of the bolt is needed only the washer for the 192152 pulley will need to be modified. I sell the bolt and washer with the pulley for $6.00, with out the pulley $10.00. It takes me 30 min to machine a grade 8 bolt and washer with my small lath. You can take a 1" drill and drill out the center of the bolt and then grind on it some and also grind the washer down to get it close if you want to save some money. I have all the pump shaft parts for both types and the pulleys so I can fit the bolt setup right. If one day i get a real nice lath I will not be able to sleep fer a week cuzz I will stay up all night playing with it.

Jeff..... ..yer gonnna "bottom" yer 1-1/2" long crankshaft bolt iff'n ya don't putt some spacers (washers) under the head of your new crankshaft bolt and then yer new pulley will wobble. And while yer 5/8" grade-5 bolt is rated for 154 ft/lbs, I'd sure find a 5/8-18x1" grade-8 bolt rated to 230 ft/lbs for that application. tip: stuff some 1/4" soft rope down enny sparkie hole so you can tighten up whatever crankshaft pulley bolt you use to 150 ft/lbs..... ....Dell

so take a hacksaw or abrasive wheel and cut a half inch off the end of it, no big deal, finding the washer may be a bit harder if you dont have a lathe to machine it

I went back & looked at the pulley, the 1 1/2" won't work. I thought the center was deeper, but it's recessed for the coupler. I'll just have to find a 1" .....somewhere.

The new pulley as I recall has a deeper center than the original pulley, plus I hope there's a little extra space in the crank, but I will definitely measure before I insert. Thanks for the torque specs! You are a dang fountain of info!

I have that rope-in-the-cylinder trick etched in my little brain, among other nifty ideas you've shared.

Jeff,

Contact Hobo Rosser about the bolt, he's a member of the forum. I just bought a new pulley, hub and bolt from him. He turns the head down slightly to fit inside the hub. I think you'll find if you don't turn down the head of the bolt the hub won't fit flush against the pulley.
