Can anyone give me some pointers for changing out the guts of my 1952 8n trans. from one case (cracked around bellhousing )to replacement case. The new one has been open awhile so I am cleaning it up real good .All the gears, shafts ,bearings ,ect. are ok .My main concern are the machined seal surfaces are a little rust pitted ,can I use permatex along with the paper gaskets to seal the oil back ? Any input will be much apreshe8ed :) Thanks ,Roy

Hi Roy,

If you don't have an I&T FO-4 shop manual, I suggest you get one. That manual will be a lot of help to you on the transmission guts swap.

Also, the other critical issue is bearing preload. The FO-4 manual explains the procedure for setting the bearing pre-load. I followed Zane’s instructions (in archives) on setting the bearing preload on my Jubilee transmission repair because I didn’t have the proper tool to measure the inch-pound resistance on the main-shaft and counter-shaft bearing preload. You can adjust the preload by the number of gaskets/shims at the rear bearing retainers.

Once you study and examine the transmission for a while you will find that it is not a highly sophisticated animal but is fairly simple and straight forward in its design and operation.

The worst part of the job will be the fear of the unknown. If you run into a problem or dilemma, this forum is a great source of help and experienced expertise. HTH. Rick H. GA

The tranny isn't a presurized sump. Gasket pucky ( thin smear ) to seal up minor pitting and imperfections in flanges should be fine. ( probably not needed.. unless you got some big honkin pits..)
