I think I have it figured, but in reassembling my NAA block today, I have a question about the orientation of the main (and rod) bearings. It's plain to see that the one in the block will mount with the tab in the slot, and likewise for the bearing in the cap, but which way does the cap go back on? Should the tabs be on the same side? I'm assuming so, because this is the way the rear main bearing must mount, but it would be nice to hear from the masses.

BTW, the clearances on the bearings checked out to be .0015 to .002, well within tolereances, which was an earlier topic...

Thanks,
Ramrod

What I tell Newbies in reply to Ramrod, 10-17-2004 18:47:06
Bearing locks go lock to lock this locks both bearings again each utter and keeps'em from turn'N in the block and cap. If installed away from each utter their is no lock'N action and they will spinn. when ya install the cap install bearing lock, lock to lock. Say this to your self 10 times and recheck it 10 times if you are unsure. when ya do get the cap installed tap it down so it fits the block or rod cap and seats to the block or rod. Use only hand tools NO AIR TOOLS. If the block has a recess that the cap fits into and ya cock the main cap you will break the cap so tap it in to seat pull down with Hand tools only. After each bearing has been installed rotate the crankshaft and check end play, this goes fer rods and mains

The frist thing I do when I remove an oil pan is mark the rods and caps, of all the things you can put in the wrong place DON"T mix up the caps mains or rods. The way I do it is I stamp 1 on #1rod and cap 2on #2 rod and cap and so on down the crank. Do the same with the mains. Put the marks one above the joint and one below so when you put it back togather the caps go back just like they came off very important.take your time good luck Harry

Yeah, I bagged all of the parts upon teardown and labeled the bags, so I know where they go, just forgot to take note of the orientation of the caps. The crank/cam assembly turns easily with bolts torqued, so it can't be too far from right...

I sure hope you've got the main bearing caps marked as to what main they're from!

The standard way to mark the mains is to have the marks on the camshaft side of the engine. It is 99.9% certain the remaining main caps are installed with the notch for the bearing tab oriented the same as the back main cap.

If that's true then Ford violated the "standard" in my engine. They have numbers and casting ID's on the side opposite the cam.

Ramrod, that is how I assembled my Jubilee block. The slots are on the same side. I was careful when I dissassembled the block to take note of details like this. The rods and caps were numbered, which made it easy to keep them oriented. I did have a problem driving the triangular shaped rear main side seals in. I had to buy 4 of em' before I got them drove in right.

By the way, I have pretty much finished my Jubilee project. I plan on borrowing a digital camera (since I don't own one) tomorrow and take a pic to show it off here on the N board.

She looks great and she runs just as good as she looks. I've already had three people that has seen it to asked me if I wanted to sell it. But, she's not for sale at this time.
