I bought a 49 ford 8n a couple of months ago . This is my first tractor . The rear main leak is getting bad. Can this be fixed without splitting the tractor. Can the rope seal be replaced by removing the oil pan.any advice would be helpful. Thanks Rick

Rick,
if you are sure the rear main is leaking all you need to do is pull the oil pan, loosen the crank and fish the top of the seal out. grease the new one and slide it in. they used to sell a special tool for this.

Don't waste any money on cheap tools to "fish" the upper seal out. Getting it out isn't the problem.
The problem is getting the new rope in. The chinese finger trick doesn't work. You'll scratch the surfaces of your crank, you'll get real P----ED OFF!! and you'll bust your knuckles and give up!
Support the tractor, remove the pan/sump and remove the lower seal. Do not trim it. Soak it in oil a few hours (you should start soaking it before you start dropping the pan/sump.) Install the lower seal useing the excess length to force into the ends of the upper seal, torque it all properly, and reassemble. It may still drip a few days, but eventually will stop.

OR>>>>>>> You can do it the correct/hard way and drop the crank to replace the upper seal as well. Either way, it'll still drip a few days more.

If you change the rear seal, change the front one too!

It looks like a chinese finger. I have used copper wire to pull it through ang just cut the excess wire off and push it up. But.... taking just the pan off maybe a chore.

Rick..... ....as far as I know, you'll haffta split yer tractor to remove your flywheel so you can remove your crankshaft so you can have access to the upper-half (green) rear main seal rope.

You have to remove your front axle to remove your castiron chassis oilpan.

Others claim just replacing the lower-half (red) in the oilpan and leaving the tag ends LONG will force the upper rope enuff to make good contact seal with the crankshaft. Replacing ropeseals is an lost art.

NOTE: neather the front or rear rope seals are under any OIL PRESSURE to prevent leaks.

And are you certain that your oil leak is really engine oil and not the tranny front seal leaking hydro-tranny oil from OVERFILL? Front tranny oilseal ($3, cheap) should be replaced iff'n you split yer tractor ennyways. Ittza 4-bolt 15 minute job.

Its real eazy for a tractor neubie to OVERFILL the 5 gal hydro-tranny resevoir; and its just as eazy to make certain that your tranny oil is proper oil-level. Just remove the bottom bolt of the 6" round dip-stick plate and let the overfilled oil drain overnite, down the outside of the tranny into a catch basin. Then put the bolt back in and check the tranny dipstick for correct oil level; file a new "full" mark on the dippstick. Simple, eh?..... ....Dell
