Greenhorn..... ....your 6-volt positive ground 1949 8N came from the factory with a 1-terminal squarecan ignition coil, clip mounted by a wire-bale ontop the frontmounted distributor with 2-clip mounted 4-nipple sparkie cap. Iff'n yer ignition system doesn't match that description, then we don't know 'nuttin' about your current ignition system from your description. Do ignition coils die immediately? usually NO. Usually the frontmount squarecan coil melts its internal insulative tar and shorts out some of the windings. It takes about 1 hour of running time for the coil to heat-up and melt the tar. The tar will cool-off overnite and re-insulate the windings and you will be able to re-start in the next morning. Once the coil start its tar-melt routine, it's time for a new coil and figger out why its melting the tar. Usually its becouse the distributor points closeing because the rubbing block has worn. This allows too much time and the tar warms up. You do know ittza 2-bolt, 15 minute job to remove your frontmount distributor and carry it in to work on it on the kitchen table, don't you? Points gap is 0.015". Your distributor is driven by an OFF-SET tang scheme and can't be re-installed outta time. Just gently finger start the 2-bolts and then twirl the rotor until it drops into the camshaft slot. Then tighten the mounting bolts. Re-snap the dangling 4-nipple cap. Piece o'cake, eh?..... ...Dell, the self-appointed sparkie-meister
