I was told that I could use my good ol' 9n for splitting logs and put down the old rusty axe I've been using. Sounds like a great idea but has anyone ever seen the set up? I would sure like to see a photo if its true.

I recently bought a log splitter at an auction for my 8n. It basically consists of a shaft that connects to the PTO and is supported by the two lower points of the three points and stabalizer bars. The business end of the shaft is a screw shaped wedge that screws into the side of the log your splitting and cracks it like a walnut. It is a fairly simple looking device. So far I haven"t had any problems, although one needs to take care when operating this tool. I could see someone getting wrapped up in it if they weren"t paying attention. It has a couple avantages despite its safety issues. You simply roll the log into the "screw" and it does the rest so there isn"t any lifting of heavy logs. Also it doesn"t require hydraulics to operate. If you can find one I would recommend it.

If you would like I could email you a picture of the splitter.

I picked up a used splitter a few years back for about 300$ (trailer type). The 9N works great to tow it with on the ball.... I vote that you look for a splitter if your burning much wood. I burn about 7 cord per season. NO WAY I could possibly keep up doing it by hand... Do yourself a favor and look for a self powered unit on wheels... You will love it...

When I was a kid a friend's dad had one that fit on the PTO. It was a cone shaped thing about 12" in diameter with large screw threads. With the PTO turning he would stick a log into it and it would screw itself into the log a split it. I remember seeing ads for a similar device where you would jack up the back of the truck and mount it on the rear wheel and do the same thing.

I remember them from the Old Mother Earth News, back when it was a good mag. Never actually owned one, but had friends that did! Seems like too much hassle to obtain split wood. I exercise with the maul, so it is not to my advantage to have one. But, it sure is effective on logs!! Not 100% safe, but what is?? If it is totally safe, it is not effective!! CC

That"s the thing. I"d rather put the $260 towards a hydrualic splitter.

I've heard rumors of a log splitter that was "screw operated" off of the PTO. It was VERY dangerous (and I try my best NOT to be a "safety preacher") and was, most likely, discontinued, because of that...

Hopefully someone might know of a picture of one?

CanyonInjun..... ...the N's internal hydraulic pump is a weak-sister of 2.7 gpm and 1700 psi (in new condition). And while you can jurry-rigg an external pressure outlet by chaining down the 3-point lift to by-pass the internal hydraulic pressure out the corner pressure test port. I don't think you will be very happy with the logsplittin' performance.

While there are 3-point hitch mountable, external engine powered, hydraulic pump operated log-splitters. They generally are more expensive than the equivalent trailer mounted log splitters, and NOT AS CONVENIENT..... .Dell

Actually, I like splitting wood! Allows me to work off agressions in a proper manner..just imagine the log is (person you are annoyed with, boss, wife, etc) Just split a few rounds every day, and soon you"ll have it all split! And be healthier, as well! Good exercise!
