Roger: Zane's right on. I had the same problem about 6 weeks ago - posted the problem on the site and was advised that it was most likely a bearing or bearing retainer issue. I wanted to update the PTO from a 1 1/16 to a 1 3/8 shaft anyhow to get rid of the adapter & bought the new shaft assembly.

When I pulled out the old shaft, I had a bad bearing & a bad bearing retainer. The bearing was collapsed and the bearing retainer wasn't retaining anything - just spinning on the shaft. It was a quick 4 bolt, 15 minute job. Scraping the gasket surface took more time than anything else. GA Jim

Usually the reason the PTO will not stay in gear is because of a loose PTO bearing. This can be caused by a badly worn bearing, a broken snap ring groove in the PTO bearing housing or the bearing retainer sleeve having moved from where it should be. Or the bearing snap ring can be dislodged.

Any movement front to back will cause it to jump out of gear.

The PTO coupling splines can also be worn and cause it to jump out of gear too, but not as often as the before mentioned things.

The detent is another thing to examine but it is less likely to be the problem.

Always be sure that the telescoping portion of the drive shaft is well lubricated or it can damage the PTO bearing etc.

I think that it is the grease on the mower telescoping portion of the drive shaft I do know I have not grease her and is little dry
So will try the grease,
And go from that,
Thanks

Roger..... ..there is suppost to be a spring loaded "ball-detent" in your PTO shifter rail mechanism. You may be able to reach thru the 6" round plates to check. The PTO shifter lever otherwize just sets in a groove in the shifter mechanism. Others just don't bother and use a rubber bungee cord to hold the PTO lever in place. Your call..... ...Dell

Glad you brought up the bungee cord. Going to put one in my truck so I'll have it next time I go to my property.
It's been kinda awkward mowing with my left foot on the lever. :-)
