After I put in a new coil, my 8N runs great for 15-20 minutes, but after that I have to increase the choke to keep 'er goin'. Doing so, it runs great. What next? It's a 6-volt, with an 8-volt battery. My ammeter now reads about 2 to 3, was about 10...?

I have a 12 battery with a 12 volt coil and I"ve learned that without a resistor between the 2, I burn up my points quite often. My suggestion would be to check the points and see if they are shot, I had the same problem not 2 weeks ago...choking er" to keep it running....replaced the points and she runs like a top. Just my 2 cents.....

ODF -

The next time you have to get another coil, get one that is labelled with "External Resistor Not Required" on the outside of the can. Those have a 3 ohm resistive wiring for the primary coil. That will limit the coil amps to about 4 amps and prevent premature burnout of the points.

Greenie..... ...you still gotts WEAK SPARKIES, pulling your choke enriches the mixture so the weak sparkies can ignite it.

There are 4 common runtime issues with the squarecan frontmount distributor

1) runs for about 1 minute and quits; bad condenser; not your stated problem
2) runs for about 5 minutes and quits; clogged carb filters; not your stated problem
3) runs for about 1 hour and quits; restarts after cooling overnite; bad ignition coil
not your stated problem
4) runs for about 15 minutes and quits; restarts after a couple of hours
sound like your stated problem?
BAD IGNITION SWITCH $10 (cheap)..... ...Dell

Using the choke to keep it running has no affect on the ignition system. It sounds to me that something is causing a lean condition and that"s what you are overcoming with more choke.

When it"s warmed up (15~20 minutes)it should run a little better on a lean condition. Not sure if we are talking at idle or not here but something is either blocking fuel flow or increasing airflow downstream of the carb. It"s entirely possible that there is a maniflod leak that is opening up as the engine warms. Dell had a good suggestion the other day to take WD-40 and spray around the intake manifold while she"s sputtering and see if it suddenly smooths out. Wherever that spot is would be where you are losing vaccuum.

The other thing that comes to mind here is clogged fuel filters. Check and clean out all 3 of them. There is a possibility that the tank vent is plugged and an easy way to check that would be to loosen the gas cap when it starts running rough.

So far as the new ignition parts, hey you probably needed them anyway. The 8 volt battery should go if it will start on a 6V. I had an 8V in my 2n when I got it and it fried the coil. Not sure if that"s the culprit but I feel good blaming it. The engine turns slower on 6V and doesn"t start as easily but it will fire eventually.

Hope these thoughts help

What else have you done lately? New points, plugs, condenser, wires, ignition switch, etc? Cleaned the fuel filters? Why did you replace the coil in the first place? Frontmount or sidemount? Lastly.....that 8v battery is doing you no good whatsoever, and if someone has screwed around w/ the VR trying to make it charge an 8v battery off of a 6v generator, that might well be part of your problem.

New plugs a few weeks ago. It was suggested I needed a new coil for better spark...? The 8-volt was in when I bought it.

Cleaning out 2 of the 3 fuel filters will take you about 10 minutes; one is in the brass elbow going into the carb and the other is in the top of the sediment bowl. While it's not likely going to solve your problem, replcing the plugs w/o new points & a condenser really doesn't get you much. Plugs will usually out live about 2-3 sets of points (unless you have an oil burner).
