What year Is My 8N?

I just bought a nice 8N but the serial number on the block has been erased. I'm told it has been overhauled and so I can only assume it has the original motor. It has also been converted to 12 volt. I know it is an earlier 47 to 49 model because the distributor is in the front of the block as opposed to the side of the block. It also has a small built-in "bulb" on the gear shift as opposed to a screw on knob. No Ford imprint is found on the fenders. The front of the tractor has the oval Ford logo but I don't see any holes where the Ferguson name would have appeared. It has a bumper on the front.
Is there any other way besides the serial number on the block to tell me exactly what year this was made? The manifold has a number on it but assume it is the product number and will fit any 8N. Any help would be appreciated.

Here's a link to help you figure it all out. Sounds like you have a '48 8N built in late '47. The early 8N's had a different clutch linkage. Check the link to see the difference.

Frontmount distributors came on 8N's until Feb 1950, so it could be a 1950 engine. You can get close to when a part was made by looking for casting numbers; look at the bulge behind thae starter for the block casting number. B230 means Feb 23, 1950; A161 means Jan 16, 1951; you get the idea. Casting marks are often on the oil pan and the tranny. The pump will usually have an actual date. Sometimes the axle trumpets have them. The closer the numbers are, the more likely you will be to pin down the year and close to the month it was assembled..... but remeber, these parts are interchangeable!

Thats cool info Bruce, using that I just found out that my block date was Oct 14,1947..I checked my pump along time ago,it shows 1947 also.. So I guess that would make my 8N most likely an early 48 model?

Thanks,
Tim

Depends on when the "model" year changed. I can't recall if it was Jan 1st or some other date. What is the serial number of your tractor? What you can say w/o doubt is that the block was cast on Oct 14, 1947. Use the serial number to determine model year; casting marks are for grins! The more casting marks you have w/ the same or close dates will serve to narrow down the build date. For example, my 50 frontmount has a block date of 2/17/50, a pan date of 2/17/50, a tranny date of 2/7/1950 and a pump date of 8/29/49. The serial number calls it a 1950 model, and 3 of 4 dates are all in Feb, so my guess is that the tractor came off the assembly line the third or fourth week of Feb, 1950.

Bruce:

I crawled under the tractor and found "9N.66.75" stamped on the oil pan cover. It also had "SH" and "H12" stamped on the bottom of the pan as well. Am I to assume that this is a replacement 9N engine swapped out a while back? Or could the owner have used some 9N parts to replace worn out parts? Are 8N and 9N parts even interchangable? When Ford switched from the 9N production to the 8N, could the production line have used left over 9N parts on the 8Ns? As you can see, my knowledge of the N series tractors needs to be improved. Your help is appreciated.

Far more parts interchange between the 9N & 8N than don't..... oil pans do for sure. I'm guessing that the number you found is some type of casting code & perhaps someone w/ more knowledge than me can tell you what it means. But, until you find a letter followed by 3 numbers, I'm not able to crack the secret code. Guess we need an 8N decoder ring! Get a wire brush & a flashlight & go to work on that serial number. I'm told only the N industrial engines did not carry serial numbers; some where under the paint & rust you will probably find a number.

Thanks for the information Bruce. I'm curious to see if I'll be able to see some dates now that I know where to look. Thanks for your time.
