Rusted Automatic Draft Control on 2N

The plunger is rusted to the yolk inside the big spring on the rear of my 2N. I have tried four types of super penetrants (with and
without heat) (with hammering) and am afraid if I torque it too much I'll break the fork (which I'm told is unobtainable).

I'm now soaking the whole works in diesel fuel for a couple of days.

I've thought of cutting the spring away to gain access to the pin where the plunger joins the fork. Then maybe I could cut the yolk off and save the plunger?

Your (hopefully better) ideas?

Thanks,

Paul

Thanks for the help JimNC and ZANE. I got it off after all the above and after 48 hours soaking in diesel fuel. I do not have oxy-acetelene here so could not pin-point heat onto the yolk's nut area, but used mapp gas to heat it several times, cooling first by spraying with penetrant, then by plunging it into the diesel fuel. I never got it red hot.

Heat is the only way! Just like he said.

Here is an old post of mine on the subject.

You will need to heat the yoke red hot all the way around the threaded part and then you probably can turn it with a bar about 2 feet long. If it doesn't want to turn when it is red hot you should not use too much force as it is possible to twist it off behind the yoke.
If it won't budge hot then let it air cool to room temperature and try it again with the bar and some WD40 or something like that.
Do not cool it with water. Let it air cool.

Zane,

I have heated it, but not yet red hot (I have no oxygen...only mapp gas) and cooled it by plunging into diesel fuel. Am I likely to have caused harm in so doing? That is: why your admonision to avoid cooling it with water?

Thanks,

Paul

Paul,
Hold the torch tight in between the coils of the spring, heat the yolk up until it is red hot, take a bar about 12" long and screw it off, it has to be done quick before it cools too much. Heat is about the only thing that is going to work.

HTH
Jim
