I have a 1946 2N and it has always worked well. The other day I was using a box blade and the three point started rising slower and slower. After a while it wouldn't lift at all. The next day I removed the inspection cover and found no leaks or fluid coming out around the piston. I could see the fluid moving around. I drained and replaced the hydralic fluid and it started working again, but now as the three point goes up it kind of jumps up and down as it goes up. The faster the engine runs the smoother it rises. When the engine is at a idle it really jumps. Before this happened it always worked quick and smooth. Any ideas, thanks in advance!

The lift jumping as it raises is a sure sign that there are one or more of the four pumps not pumping. Probably a broken valve spring/s in the pump chamber valves.

Best to pull the pump for repair. You could get the valves out with the pump in the tractor but if you drop something you are going to have to pull it anyway to retrieve it. I Have places shop towels around everything so if I did drop something it would catch it and it has worked lots of times but even then sometimes the pump will need to come out.

It is possible too that one of the Scotch yokes that the pistons are made onto are broken and that will require the pump be pulled to repair.

Well, if it doesn't knock too badly during operation and you have no leaks from the cylinder, i'd have to say it would be the releif valve. Not a hard thing to replace (screws in like a spark plug) just awkward to get to. It can be done through the inspection covers, but most people seem to pull the PTO shaft out and use SEVERAL long extensions and a socket. Your call.
