I tried the decals.. the looked bad.. I tried a couple different paint masks from different sources.. they both looked bad. i finally got out the artists brush and did the fender and hood scripts on the 8n and NAA.. took nearly forever... but looks halfway decent.

HAS ANYONE EVER TRIED TO USE AN INK ROLLER LIKE A PRINTER WOULD USE ON TYPE AND JUST ROLL SOME PAINT ON. I HAVEN'T GOTTEN AROUND TO PAINTING MINE AS OF YET, BUT THOUGHT I MIGHT TRY THIS APPROACH WHEN THE TIME CAME.

I’ve been pondering this for a while myself, and have an off the wall idea I was wondering if anyone has tried. If a person were to paint the entire script area with a water color paint, and then use a sanding block to remove the paint from the raised script leaving the rest to act as a masking device. Spray the script, and the remaining watercolor paint would catch the overspray. Once done, hose off the water color paint and the overspray should go with it. Sound doable, or have I been keeping my head too close to the exhaust pipe?

I have tried a similar process using liquid spray mask. Actually sanding the material ain't easy either, takes a lot of time and easy to slip and take off too much mask. I have sprayed red first, gray over sanding off the gray, too much work. I have stencil brayers to roll the paint on too, takes at least two applications and some polishing to look good but doable. Have used the stencils made for spray purposes and as another metioned don't fit well cost a lot and only are one time use, junk. In short tried them all and a good sign painter is reasonable, stressless and will turn out a near perfect job every time. Got a friend that is an artist?

Let a teenager do it while you're having a beer somewhere else. Works perfect.

I used the painting masks that you can catalog order. They were tricky in that they would not lay perfectly flat on the fenders and hood. I used an HVLP sprayer. Paint was on the thick side to avoid runs and I put on very light coats. I would say the job came out very good. It actually looks factory perfect at 5 feet. If you look very close, you can detect slight imperfections. I would use the masks again. I understand, however, that the decals look excellent when applied properly.

I used a small artist's brush and a steady hand ... turned out looking pretty good -- especially at Dell's 20/20 -- 20ft. or 20 MPH. :<)

I know one way NOT to do it. Scroll up the page to my post titled "P.T. Barnum test" and look at the tractor in the link.

My local sign painting shop will paint the Ford script with real paint on my 8N's for $10 a side $10 a fender. Total perfection, no runs, no drips, no errors looks better than new.

On my Jubilee project tractor I used the end of a felt pen cap (with the felt pen attached) as well as the tip end of my index finger. I dipped the end of the pen cap in a little red paint and dabbed it on to the script. The fingertip worked well on the larger sections of the script. This may have been a little unorthodox but it turned out great.

I have heard of some using a small artist brush.

There are decals you can buy at Tractor Supply and other stores like them.
