Questions from a rookie who knows little about electrical: My 1949 8N won't start. Prior to this episode, I had to replace my battery. With new 6V battery, started up like a champ. After it sat for a few weeks, I went to start it again, and nothing. The Starter Relay does chatter for a couple seconds on occasion when I try to start - no clicks, no turning. Most times, I hear nothing at all. My lights do not come on, so that tells me I'm not getting any juice from the battery, but it's new and I tested gravity of acid - looks good. Reconnected the terminal connections - clean and tight. Sanded off end of positive cable where it connects to frame. Reconnected negative cable to relay - tight. Purchased a new Starter Relay, but it doesn't match the old one - mount does not match up at all - so can't replace that till I find correct one. I have an FO-4 manual and can look at previous postings here for ideas, but my question is, what size cable (guage) do I use for a jumper wire? I don't have one, and not sure what I need. Any additional suggestions are welcome! Thanks!

In case anyone was curious - the resolution to my starting problem was replacing the negative battery cable. Never a dull moment! Thanks for the assistance!

Rick..... ...I use some very flexable rubber multi-strand meter TEST LEAD WIRE that I get at the local electronics parts store. I then put alligator clippies on each end, about 4-feet long. 14ga is big enuff (15 amp) to handle all but the STARTER CABLE (1/0) power needs.

Make certain you have a good ground between the starter endplate and the tranny hole. Loosen the 8" long starter screws about 1/4" and pull starter out abitt, scrub the joint-gap with wire brushes or sandpaper so you gittta good ground. This will also effect your starter solenoid chattering..... ....Dell

Thanks - I hadn't seen your posting when I replied to Bruce. I'll do as you suggest - but not sure what you are saying to clean? I'm looking at the exploded view of the starter in FO-4 pg 56. I hadn't touched anything (until the steps I've taken in my earlier posting) except replacing the battery (which worked fine for a day), so all existing connections have been working fine for the 2 years I've had the tractor. Is this a common problem, for connections to be fine one day, then fail the next? I guess since my lights aren't working, the next thing would be to replace the battery cables (after I get a charger and make doubly sure the battery didn't die somehow - the lights were off when I last parked it). Thanks!

"not sure what you are saying to clean?"...the way
I understand it is the starter gets its ground from the tranny case. Loosen but don't remove the 2 bolts holding the starter on. Take some sand paper to the area. Tighten things back up.
HTH...don t. .....

Jumper wire for what purpose? Do you mean battery cables? Not a bad idea....you need one guage to go to the solinoid, and a wire strap to go to the block (positive). If you can't find a strap, use one guage there as well. If you're talking a jumper cable to start it, doesn't matter; use the plain vanilla cables 'cause you're going to jump it directly to the starter post. Doesn't matter if you use 6v or 12v, pos or neg ground, as long as you hook it directly to the starter lug, and the other cable to the tractor frame, and REMEMBER that it will turn over as soon as you touch it, so keep it out of gear! Oh, and don't put the new solinoid on backwards; the little post for the ignition wire goes to the block. Where are you in VA?

I'm in Aylett - 30 miles NE of Richmond. I was referring to a wire to perform some troubleshooting (again, I don't know what I'm doing - just following previous postings and the FO-4 manual). Regarding the other reply that asked if the battery was charged - it was when I bought it - it started up fine the first time I installed it. Guess I need to purchase a 6 volt charger in case - I have a 12V as well as a 12V tickler charger (1.5 amp), so won't use those. Again, I'm assuming the battery is good since the acid passes the gravity (floating balls) test. I put a MultiTester to the battery posts - it registers half of what I get compared to a 12 volt in my truck, so I'm assuming that's correct since one battery is 12 and the other is 6 volt. So I just need a basic wire with alligator clips to perform troubleshooting? I can't imagine I need 1 guage - that's awfully thick. I'm focusing on chapter 81 of FO-4. Thanks for responding!

No, you sure don't need a 1 guage wire for a test wire! And, what a small world; I'm in Old Church,10 miles from you. If the wife didn't have a list for me today & tomorrow, I'd come by & give you a hand. If it's not running next weekend, I'l be glad to make a house call!

Hey Bruce - yeah it is a small world - I figured you'd be on the other end of the state. I'm off all of this week in case you have an open day - but I would certainly welcome a house call next weekend, or whenever you have time. Will ensure you are compensated for your time. Just send me a note at kizer@erols.com and I'll let ya know where I stand with this problem. Thank you for the kind offer! I have a co-worker that lives near Old Church - takes the turn at the West Store on 360.

I don't want to sound dumb but are you sure you battery is charged. If you have no lights and everything is clean It almost has to be the battery. Try and hook up charger and turn your lights on. You can also take a pair a jumper cables and go from battery to starter. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE IT IN NEUTRAL IT CAN AND WILL RUN YOU OVER
