What size socket do I need to take off the rear
axle nut, it looks a little chewed up like
someone used a pipe wrench on it.

I just talked to the most experienced parts guy at the local NH dealer and he said the big nut is 2". He said you need a 2" wrench or a 2" socket to loosen or tighten the nut. HTH.

If the old one is chewed up bad, I would not waste a lot of time on it trying to get something to fit, just drill it and then wham it with a chisel and it will come right off. New nuts are about $6 as I recall. I say this because I wasted a whole day trying to get my old nut off before I stopped and thought, hey!, this is only a $6 part and I just spent hours on it. Even if you don't have a local parts place, by the time you are ready to put your wheel back on the nut will probably be at your door if you order it.

I had the same problem & bought a craftman 2" x3/4 drive Socket for about $20.00. I Also broke down and bought the t-Slide handle wench for another $20.00. It worked well since I don't have a torque wench and needed to jump on the wench to get close to 450 LBS ,since I weight in at 225 lbs .

Try AutoZone. They have some cheap 3/4" drive BIG SOCKETS. I bought a couple so far for my NAA project with a 1/2" to 3/4" adapter for my impact wrench, or maybe eBay if you're up to that, but AZ is my best bet.

Corvette..... ....I use a 3/4" drive, 1-7/8" 12pt socket on my 8N's rear axle nut. Torqued to 450 ft/lbs. Most shadetree mechanics don't have that size and crescent wrenches can't be fitted flat and so they slip and don't have handles long enuff and pipewrenches don't slip. Rent a 3/4" drive socketset $10 cheap..... ...Dell

Well if I say 2 inches and Dell says 1 7/8 inches, believe Dell. Maybe someone took my advice and rounded off your nut's corners. Wouldn't be the first time I exaggerated a measurement!

Every 8N had 2" off the assembly line, good replacements like TISCO, NH are 2". That is not to say there is no wierd or aftermarket, homemade or cobbled ones out there! A few months ago a fellow posted and swore his were 1-15/16"!

2 inches. But if its so bad you can't measure across the nut from flat to flat it may be too chewed up to use a socket anyway.

I measured mine with a tape measure and it looks like 2 inches.

I checked with NAPA about 2" socket and it was $55. I think I can do better than that on the price.

I do not consider myself a cheapscap but I never seem to have a lot of money at one time, just a little at a time:-).
