Ok, I bought a 9n the other day and I happen to be the second owner, believe that. Going through the tool box it had the original wrenchs etc along with this chain thing. There is two of them, about 24" long with a "J" looking hook staped out of metal on one end, and the other end has a pear shaped piece of metal with square hole, but in the middle of the chain they have an oval piece of metal with "WARNING to avoid damage to pump put control lever fully down and fit wedge under stopper" stampped in the oval. I dont know if this is even a 9n releated object but it is painted 9n grey. I was just wondering if it is , and if it is what are they used for. Thank you

You can see the chain on the right hand stabilizer

Since others have chimed in, I might as well, too. The device you found is still used on my 2N that Dad bought new. He (and I) use it to ensure that the 3 point lift lever stays DOWN when using the PTO and an attachment that hangs on the drawbar... like the miserable sickle mower he had.... the guys are right, the lift will mess up the adjustable drawbar stabilizer arms.

A fixed stop might be the ticket on the 8N, but the 2N and 9N aren"t amenable to a fixed stop setting the 3 point height.

Hang on to the original items, they"re pretty unique these days.

The stop on the quadrant is adjusted to hold the quadrant lever in the correct position for the height you want the drawbar at. The J shaped piece of metal on the chain fits into the wingnut on the stop on the 3 pt quadrant and prevents the lever from being raised resulting in bent stay bars. The other end bolts to the tractor so the quadrant stop is always near at hand. Hope this is clear.

Tom..... ....oh shure, its for when you use the tri-angulate-ing bolt-adjustable "stablizing bars" between the 11-hole drawbar and the 3-point toplink pin. The stablizing bars prevent the 3-point lift from lifting when you back a trailer or it keeps your sicklebar mower at a constant mowing height. Trust me, that hydraulic lift will bend those height stablizing bars. They're kinda rare because they got lost eazy. The chain is useable on ALL N-Tractors.

Hummmnnn.....24" long you say and two of them? Could be 11-hole drawbar height chain limiters. Commonally used with 5' brushogs to set the mower height, yet allow you to lift the mower over obsticals like rocks and logs and stuff and yet returns to the original chainlength set mower height without you watching. Still hooked between the 2-bottom 3-point lift pins and the toplink 3-point pin under yer buttbuckett..... .....Dell

Hey thanks for the info and the chains are more like 3 foot than 2 after i measured. I am finding more item that you usual dont see these days with this tractor. The man kept about everything that came with it new, and kept it with the tractor to this day. PTO extension, belt pulley, hand crank, even though it has a loader on it,snap in battrey cover, the 3pt jack that lifts the tractor up, wrenches, these chains, original top link, all of the stabilizers, straight sheet meatl etc. He farmed with it for years until up grading and then cleaned livestock pens, it had not been off the farm until now. Well enough gushing, thanks for the info again.

It is a N device, at least on the 8N, not sure about the 2N or 9N. It is used to make sure the pump is off(control lever fully down )and lift bars do not force against converging fixed bars (third point)when they are installed.

If you can find an original (or reprint) of the 1939-1947 Ford Tractor Owner"s Manual Instruction Book (it"s green) it will show this on pg 8, and how it"s installed/used. Cool that you"ve got it! Congrats!
