I recently bought an 8N. I started it up tonite and noticed sparking from a bolt that holds the starter. I tightened the bolt and that seemed to do the trick. But I also notice a small glow (can see easily when it's dark) when I crank where the battery cable is grounded to the block. Is that normal??

Your ground connections are dirty or cruded up with paint. Just take them loose and clean with some emery cloth or sand paper. I would pull your starter loose and clean around it to.
