I have a 51 8n that we kept with the original 6 volt electrical system but I was told to put a 8volt battery in for the extra cranking power. I was working it for the first time this weekend with a 5' bush hog and after awhile it just shut off after checking everything realized that I wasn't getting spark at the points I filed them and everything was good to go fired right up but it shut off again. Here are my questions.
1. is the 8volt batt. causing the problem?
2. if so can I put a resistor on it to stop this problem?
3. Should I just go back to a 6volt batt.?
4. Is it possible that there is something else that I'm missing?

Man was it fun to be out there working that thing at least while it lasted. Thanks in advance for any help you guys can give me.

Whoever told you to use the 8v battery didn't do you any favors.. just made more work for you.

8v on the 6v system doesn't charge well.. so you have a discharged 8v battery.. pluss it works the points over a bit more.

Go back to 6v, or go forward to 12v.. either is acceptrable, depending on use or circumstances.. but 8v is a bad bandaid. First.. though.. I recomend you fix the 6v system and see where you are at.

It ran with the 6volt system and we were told it would just help on starting. we were also told to rework the voltage regulator to help with the charging problem and we are going to do this this week but I think I'll just go get a 6volt batt. today and be done with it. nothing like original. thanks

I think you are making a good choice. Dinking with a mechanical VR is a bit of work.. and it would help to be lectrically inclined.. and even then it is more of an art than a science.

If you were only having minor starting problems, sometimes a simple cleaning or battery and cable replacement can go a long way. Pay special attention to the ground strap, and ground at the tractor frame, and the mating of the starter to the body casting.

A new set of wires, points, plugs, rotor, cap and condensor, and a new coil ( if using an oem one ) also aid in starting.

I just remember when I was a kid the old family tractor had what was called an "automatic battery" for the 6 volt issue. This battery looked like a 12 volt but had a solenoid looking devise inbeded into it. If I remember correctly it was really two 6 volt batteries built into one. During the start up procedure it work by series up to 12v via the solenoid looking devise and then reverted back to 6v after running. It was only 12 volt for starting and 6 volt the rest of the time. Worked perfect and never gave us any problems. Not sure if they are still made today, maybe someone else knows ... heck, I just converted my 9N to 12v and saved the old 6v parts in the barn.

I had one on a 47 Chevy in 1965.....haven't seen or heard of one since. Because the solenoid was on top of the battery, I doubt it would fit in an N.

Six to twelve volt batteries still exist and can be bought but like an eight volt battery in an n series they are a poor band aide and will likely cause you more trouble than they are worth. While I can see a use in something like a stock 331 inch six volt Chrysler with a stock dash, I can't imagine them being worth the price for an n series tractor.

Your mileage may vary
