I don't see a parking brake on my 8N. Isn't there supposed to be a lever on the right side of the rear axle for this? Thanks in advance.

The most effective parking brake on an N is to leave it in gear & shut the engine off. The next most effective is to buy the after-market kit; I have one & they work great. The brake pawl works by depressing the brake & setting the pawl by hand. To release it, step on the brake.....or, as I discovered..... .walk away from the tractor as they do slip loose!

What you are referring to is an after market unit. An example is shown on Smith's 8n web page and 2 different reproduction styles are produced by Red Rock Manufacturing. Just do a search for their page.

8N Is In..... ....each individual parking brake shaft has little ratchett notches on the side of the tranny that little pawls fit into. Just step hard on your brake pedal and reach down and tinkle your pawl into the parking brake notch..... ..... Dell

There is supposed to be a brake pawl to lock the brake on when you reach down and engage it. It's on the right side, just behind the cover that has the tarnsmission dipstick. If you have one, take a look in your operator's manual on page 14 (figure 4).
