Hey there, A question on the (2N)carb adjustment....The large screw on the side of the carb is only about 3/4 of a turn out, and the tractor seems a little rich, dark grey smoke when I pull in some throttle. It also has a slight miss. Gonna put new plugs in it, as the ones in there now are really rusty. I turned it in all the way when it was running about 1/2 throttle, and it didn"t make any difference....Seems to run fine when running my 6" hog, starts fine with just a shot of choke, and idles down to about 400 rpm, am I worried about nothing?

Thanks, Joe

You won't notice any change with that side screw at 1/2 throttle. You should notice a difference at 400rpm because it's all about idle. I think I'm at 5/8-turn but I don't really know. I just turn it in until I see the rpm drop off and then back out a tiny bit to max rpm at idle.
Why are those plugs rusty? Don't see that around here.
Turn that top screw in 1/8-turn at a time just until the smoke goes away and you should be fine tuned.

The downpointing mainjet can probably start at 1 turn out, then mess with it. Out enriches. ( I have mine set at about 1.5 turns out )

The side pointing idles jet should be adjusted for max rpms.. remember in=enrich out=lean. ( mine is about 3/8 turn out )

Behind your carb is the throttle set screw.

If you are making alot of grey smoke.. all the time.. check to see that you are not loosing any water.. ( check for water in oil.. or oil in water ).

Alrighty then the big screw pointing out at me (90 degrees to the block) is the idle mixture, and turning it IN makes the mixture richer. (should be around 1/2 turn, give or take)I"m at about 5/8. The smaller screw with the spring that points down is the top end mixture, and turning it OUT make it richer, and I should start at about 1 turn. -I haven"t touched that one yet..... Do I have this correct? Rob, the plugs are rusty "cause I think they"ve been in there about 59 years, gonna change "em.

Thanks again,

Ahia Joe

Joe..... .....you've gotter right. Your sidepointing idlemix only is effective at 4-500 rpm idle. Your downpointing MainJet is everything else up to 2200 rpms governor max. Iff'n ya gitts a slight puff of black smoke when you goose yer throttle, ya might be mainjet rich, turner it 1/8 turn IN (CW) attta time and recheck.

I doubt you have 59 yr old sparkplugs, lotta sparkies metal shells just plain rust, don't hurt sparkies none. (just yer eyeballs) howsomevers, never hurts to remove your sparkies (blow away enny dirt innna the depression) and check the color of the center insulator and the the gap (0.025) and sharpness of the metal electrodes.

Color should be a dry yellowish-tanish-grayish insulator. Sooty black is carb too rich. Oily black is worn engine piston rings. (use hotter plugs to burn off the oil, but eventually will be an engine overhaul in your future)

Most find that the hotter AutoLite AL-437 sparkie works real good with modern no-lead gasoline 'cuz the colder OEM Champion H-10 fouls (clogs the gap) eazier.

Occasional misses and ruff running can also be caused by old hard and cracked sparkie wires. You doubt? Go out and watch the little blue sparkies dance on your sparkie wire in a cold DARK nite. Sparkie wires should be limp and flexable and stranded copper core, NOT modern anti-radiostatic carbon thread core. New coppercore sparkie wires $10. (cheap)..... ..... .Dell

Thanks everyone!

Dell,

I got the 437's waiting, so they're goin' in this weekend, whether they need to or not. I know the plugs in this tractor haven't been changed for awhile. It was owned by a little old lady, (really) and has very low hours. (no oil burning here), and I'm running synthetic since I bought it. Spark plug wires check out A-O.K.- even last night when it was so foggy I could hardly see the garage from the trailer! (200') After I got it, the building at the old place fell in on it, (snow/wind)damaging the radiator, cap, and sheet metal, but it runs great! Don't know what to do about the radiator neck other than to replace the radiator, can't get the cap on. I got a cork in 'er right now, and it seems to be fine....

Radiator shop can put another neck in it if the rest of the radiator is O.K.
