Need more power!

I have a 48' 8n with rebuilt motor (~5 years ago w/ 4 ring pistons) and a newly acquired 4' brush hog. I just dont seem to have the power to do much but mow the grass. I am having the carb dipped right now, and rebuilt (the float was full o' gas) The usual problems. I have heard of people using 5 footers before with no problem. Compression is moderate, oil pressure is good, does the old machine have enough power to get the job done? It is not a show tractor by any means, she is a working machine who pulls firewood out of the the mountains in upstate ny for years. What should I try next?

Hungry..... ...while its quite possible that your 23hp frontmount 8N engine nolonger outputs that much power, a 5 yo rebuild should have PLENTY of POWER to operate a 5ft brushhogg. Unless yer mowing really heavy stuff, just take half-a-cut. Simple, eh?

Make certain your centrifical ignition timing is up-to-snuff. Consult yer I&T FO-4 manual for timing instructions. Look at the picture. You do know that ittza 2-bolt 15 minute finnagle to remove your distributor and work on the kitchen table, don't you? Just un-clip yer 4-nipple crabcap and letter dangle. Re-installation by finger installing the 2-bolts and then gently twist the rotor until the tangs slip into the OFF-SET cam drive slott. Simple, eh?

3-things will effect your engine power; timing at the right time; carb mainjet adjustment; and governor response. Check-em out..... ....Dell

Powerhungry: I've got a '52 8N runnin a 5 ft. hog & it'll cut up, chew up, & spit out the back anything I can push over in 1st gear. Mine's nothin to look up; just a work horse that gets the job done. I'm using it to clear about 15 acres of land. If you've got good compression, the right fuel mixture, and strong sparks at the right time; it should get it done for you. Is the governor workin right to give you the power when you need it? Good luck with it. It should pull a 4 ft. hog and not have to really break a sweat. GA Jim
