Differential pinion bearing preload problem?

While working on the hydraulics, I noticed that the nuts which adjust the differential bearing preload in my 2N are loose. The tab-over lock washers are in place but the nuts are visible loose. I understand the instructions for setting this preload to mean do it as part of a rear-end overhaul with the mainshaft and possibly wheels still off the tractor. Is that correct?

Okay, assuming it is...how much snugging up can I do safely just by the seat of my pants? I'm presuming this looseness is not good. Whatsay?

I would answer your question by asking how good a mechanic are you. If you can tighten the nuts to get a "snug but free" adjustment on the bearings, lock it down. ray

Thanks, Ray,

I buttoned everything back up this morning and did tighten the pinion nuts down. It took less than 1/6 turn to take up the slack and then I re-locked everything. The repair to the hydraulics works fine. Thanks to whoever posted (I read in the archives) to refit the control valve's t-handle to the fork through the drain hole. Boy did that save agrivation! Also thanks to whoever suggested greasing both sides of all gaskets...the removal of old gasket material was the most time consuming part of the repair.

This evening I mowed several acres with no problem, although the lift drops down a bit faster than it did before (still stays up very well)...probably because the rings no longer fit the grooves they have made in the cylinder. (I had to remove the piston to get everything really clean). I guess I'll put an "o"-ring piston and ream job on the list for next winter.

And thanks Zane and Jim for the advise on freeing the ADC yolk.

I guess next I'll tackle the sloppy stearing on this 2N

Paul
