can someone tell me what stabilizes the top of a 51 8n radiator, is it only the top radiator hose?

Yep, that's about it. On dad's 2N, we actually pushed the top of the radiator back a bit by hand and held it there when we tightened the upper hose clamps to keep the radiator in such a position that the fan wouldn't rub the shroud. With the hose being straight, it works out pretty well for this, plus I felt better with a little tension being on it to keep the radiator from vibrating around on anything else. I wouldn't depend on the hood at all for any support. If the hood fits the radiator tightly enough to stabilize it, it's bound to rub a hole in the tank eventually.

THe hood fits down over the filler neck too. The pad(if you have one)makes it pretty snug.

There should be a fibre chafe-pad which fits between the hood and radiator. Some folks have replaced it with a old folded inner tube with a hole cut in it for the rad. cap.

Yes, sir, you are right. I always thought that was a way to help maximize air flow through the radiator instead of past the rad cap. See how false perceptions can occur?
I've bought several of them for tractors that I have worked on.
