After my 52 8n runs for about five minutes, the only way I can keep it on is by playing with the choke. I took apart the carburetor but it didn't help. Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciate it. My wife says if I can't fix it then I should get rid of it, so a lot is at stake here. thanks in advance.

Woo-hooo!!!
OK so here"s what i did. First, don"t laugh, I"m on a cop"s salary, which is one step above military pay.
All right, I took apart the carberator and cleaned it out with some of the gas that spilled out of the tank, through my shirt and eventually into an old plastic butter container with just a lil bit of butter left insode it.
Second, I drove to pep boys and bought some gasket making material, red high temp sealer and two large hose clamps. I cut a piece of gasket material to put on the exhaust manifold and exhaust pipe, kind of like a tube and loaded everything up like a turkey dinner plate with some of the sealer. so.....it runs great!!!!! I even took a victory lap after it worked, put it in 4th and took off!!!!
as soon as i get the money i"ll buyh a new manifold and muffler, if that"s what it"s called.

Anyhow,thanks for all the input!!!

I have the same problem from time to time. I've found the gasoline has so many additives now that if the tractor sits unused for several days the small ports in the carb may have to be cleaned out. I take everything apart and spray out well with carb cleaner. Another problem is the extra fuel filter the previous owner added to the fuel line just above the carb inlet. It can be hard to detect because when the fuel line is removed gas flows freely from the tank, but not enough to keep the tractor running. I always keep a new filter on hand just in case. Also, there is a piece of rubber gas hose between the gas line and the filter so it makes removing the carb pretty easy. The last problem was the float sometimes was not moving freely because the steel hinge pin would get rusty and the float would either get "sticky" open or closed and flood or starve the engine. I replaced it with a short piece of brass brazing rod (3/32" I think) and it never sticks now.

Alfredo, my 49 8N needed choke to run right when I bought it. I used it like that for a year or so. The manifold had a crack that had been welded. I had the manifold re-welded, and rebuilt the carb... no difference.

I finally bought a new manifold and a new carb...and that solved the problem. I don't know if it was the new maniflod or the new carb that actually solved the problem but it was nice to run the tractor without having to keep the choke pulled out. HTH. Rick H. Ga.

other causes for 'needs choke to run' would be a vacume leak that leans out the mix needing the choke to enrich it back.. or could be weak sparkies.. possible due to a contact that heats up after a few minutes and drops too much voltage. try jumpering the key switch.. or even jumpering around other wires.. heck.. jumper fromt he battery to the coil.. see if that helps.

Tell her the same thing goes for her car. If she can't fix it she should get rid of it. Buy a carb rebuilt kit and follow the simple directions. It's easy and cheap.

Isn't this a bit harsh?

Oh yeah,...it just occurred to me....try loosening your fuel cap and see if it runs OK. If so, you have a plugged fuel-tank vent. You can either remove your hood and use a wire to clean out the vent hole in the top of your tank...or you can do what I did and drill a 1/16" or 1/8" hole thru the center of the fuel cap (right thru the rivet.) Do it AWAY from the fuel tank, of course. ;Þ
