Leaking Steering Fluid

Hi Folks,

I have a '52 8N. I filled the steering box up wit gear oil, and shortly thereafter noticed oil leaking all around the steering box. Upon closer inspection, it looks as if the oil is leaking from where the Pitman arms attach to the steering box. Is there a gasket or O-ring within that assembly that needs to be replaced, or is this leak caused by something else?

Thanks!

Paul

There is a seal around the sector shaft on my "47 8N. Your steering box is different, but I would think it still has a seal.

If you do a search on the archives on this issue you"ll find this is a common problem. Some folks swear by filling the box w/ a type of grease(which won"t flow past the seals)instead of the oil. Others feel the sector teeth need more lubrication than the grease can provide.

I just pulled mine apart last month & replaced the seals, bearings, & oil. It immediately started leaking again, so I pulled the sectors on both sides, put a little gasket sealant on both sides of the metal gasket & cap screws, so far no more leak(knock-knock).
