Ice in 9N brakes?

Now that Thanksgiving is here, I'm going to have to admit that summer is nearing its end.

Suddenly I remember what has happened the last two northern winters--the 9N left rear wheel locks up. I usually have to leave the 9N in the barn January - March, 'cause it won't move, or is good for tight left-hand circles only. The tractor moves fine the rest of the year.

Could water be staying in the drum for years? I do have to run the 9N through mud and water, but not up to the drums.

I'm thinking of just backing off the left brake with the adjuster stem for the winter, 'cause I'm not too handy.

Your advice would be great. Happy Thanksgiving!

Mark

If the tractor stays outside (you mention having to keep it in the barn normally to prevent lock up), then it is more likely that moisture, condensation, or plain old rain is leaking into the drums and THEN either freezing or rusting that side up like a stuck clutch.

The 9N/2N brakes had a felt lining that acted as a "dust sheild" to help keep dirt and other contaminants out and it is possible that yours is so far gone that it is allowing water in. I would try throwing a tarp over it at least to keep rain water off of it. Get a big one that will drape all the way to the ground and put bricks around it so the wind doesn't blow it up. I'd give that a shot first.

O.T. dont know the name but its the pin in the hy in reply to Jeb2N, 11-24-2004 09:38:16
i am looking for information on a pin that is in the underseat location. after alot of use it will wear a groove into this and the hydraulics would not work until it was replaced(more money), or it could be turned around and used for sometime more.(a little more money). I know there was a article somewhere . sometime ago. if anyone knows of pictures, and the name , the reason for the use of this, or any thing pertinent to this. my friend is overhauling my hydraulics , and i dont think he knows of this pin. this is his first time on a ford but has worked john deeres before. he said they are all relatively simple machines, he is als0 an auto mech for about 50 years, and does hydraulics on the side. if any of you can help let me know. i left all my stuff at his place, and i dont want to bug him or hurt his feelings. he is one hell of a nice guy and a great friend. i just dont want to tell him his business. you know. he is the best. does things for a very reasonable rate, and if there is a problem , he re-does it to no-ones expense. now where do you find a mechanic, alway ready to help
