I have an 8N with a weird plate on the side of the block. I decided to check it out and see what's under the plate.

Here's the plate.

Here's what I found under it. I hope you can see the crack. It goes between the two screws taped into the block. The red one in front and the cleaned one in the rear. I guess the screws were to stop the crack from spreading. The smaller screws in the plate kept the crack together. Who ever fixed it got the tractor running again for many years. I got this tractor cheap and I knew there was something hiding under there. What do you think? Can I repair this somehow or should I get a block. The rest of the tractor is pretty good. It doesn't look great but everything works. She even runs good, no smoke and lots of power.

Yes, I lost the serial number. I wish it was there but it's not really a big deal. I know it's between 48 1/2 and 49 1/2 by the clues on the tractor. The other thing was the guy that did the repair took off the oil filter. He broke a bolt off in the head and didn't bother to get it out and replace the filter. I guess I can at least do that. I like Bob's idea to use J&B weld under the plate.

A boy baby was once born with a golden screw where his naval should have been.

A fairy appeared to the mother and told her that under no circumstance to ever tamper with the golden screw.

When the boy was old enought to understand the mother told him what the fairy had told her.

When the boy got to be kindergarden age curiosity got the best of him one day about the golden screw in his naval so he got one of his daddy's screw drivers and proceded to remove the golden screw.

His buttocks fell off!

Clean the backside of the plate, so it's free of rust, antifreeze, and oil. Hose it down with carburetor cleaner (the REAL carb spray that's NOT California approved), and dry that off with compressed air. Slather the block and the back of the plate and the screw threads with JB Weld or equivalent epoxy, and screw the plate back on. End of problem.

Comes under the heading of if it ain"t broke don"t fix it. I would button it back up and leave it alone. Runs good and doesn"t smoke sounds like good news to me. Not overheating and no water in the oil (oil in the water too) would be another thing that would serve as key criteria.

My guess is that this will eat at you though so you could keep running it and stay on alert for a good deal on a block. When you get the new gem, then proceed with a tear-down.

Best of luck

Looks like it is just in the water jacket, most likely from freezing coolant. Slap some "puckey" over the crack and put the plate back on. And ALWAYS keep full strength antifreeze in it so you NEVER open the carck up.

Good luck!
