Hello, I see you have received good advice on how to repair this problem. I want to give some advice on how to avoid this problem. Biggest problem is people will remove the spark plug when the engine is warm, that should not be done with aluminum heads. Engine should be cold when changing plugs. Also when plugs are replaced in aluminum heads the threads should be coated with anti-seize lube so the next time the plugs are removed they come out without pulling aluminum with them.

Aluminum head spark plug anti-sieze in reply to BOB061, 11-26-2004 14:28:51
But, the heck of it is, if you use more than the most sparing amount of anti-seize, when the engine heats up, it will flow down the threads, and get on the insulator of the spark plug, shorting it out!

That may be so but I have been doing this for 27 years with no problem. If you ever worked on salt trucks you would know why I live by anti-seize.

Napa has a tap to rethread the hole and a insert that will stay in. I hope you have room to use it. Use a platinum plug cuzz if theirs not much room to install the insert then their will not be enough room to stake the insert. Will work fine with out stake’n it but the insert will come out with the plug next time you change it . Platinum plug should be good fer 100K, make that a double platinum plug. The hard job is over with and that’s gett’n the old plug out. Its called save a thread and you will see the tap has a step up to it.

thank you Hobo. I will tell him what to get. Lucky thing is ,it is a V6 sitting in there side ways & the hole is in front. Lots of room to work on it. i have to do a roof job in town so will have him get the part & then help him get it in. He will have to help on the roof though.

There is no reason for a properly repaired head to spit out the spark plug and the "repair".

If it is too far gone for a Helicoil, there are other threaded inserts available that can be installed in an even larger hole.

Is the spark plug actually physically blowing out of the head?

If so, the threads are stripped in the head, but can be repaired by installing one of several types of thread repair inserts.

Yup. Happens when the plug is removed from a hot engine with aluminum head(s). Removes the threads, also.
