Got my tractor earlier today. Sounds great. There have been numerous ways described on starting tractors. I'll mention his method. It may have been brought up before. He said start the tractor first then turn on the gas. and before you shut it down turn the gas off. I know you all know why. His theory, is that the unleaded gas may just be different and won't permit the needle valve to seat properly, thus flooding will occur. How true that is I don't know, but I felt it was worth commenting on.

I have an old rest o ride seat that broke when he tried to lift it up and it broke. He had one laying around from another job and just put that one on. Doesn't look like I will have to replace the rubber bushings. I've been quoted a price of $50 a piece from a local dealer. I know the place mentioned on this forum was about $100 a piece. Nice guy.

He wanted $950.00 for the job and I gave him a thousand. He counted it in front of me and appologized for doing it but he said that one time he did a job and when he got home there was $300.00 difference. Hold on a sec. He called the man and said you gave me $300.00 too much. The Guy said I did, I intended to give you $200.00 extra. I have done business with people all my life but this ole country boy was a new experience for me.

I have an old Bolins 14 hp yard tractor. 20 yrs old forget the model no. He was interested in it. Neither one of us would give a price. So, I showed him my back blade and bush hog. Both are rusted. Blade needs new skin and cutting bar. the brush hog has a lot of rust holes. I said take the Bolins and fix the two and I would be happy. He hesitated so I said don't worry its here for you and we will work something out on the rusted pieces. My question is how can I be fair to this fellow? I don't want to drive a hard bargan with him. He couldn't take the tractor with him so I will contact him if I know what will be fair to him.

PS: on an earlier post I used the term "wimps" I was just happy to be getting my tractor. I didn't intend to offend anyone. If I did I'm sorry. I use this site for my enjoyment, if I want to fight I just need to go upstairs and see my Step Mother in Law.

Anyway, hope you guys had a good day shopping. he he .

My grand son's just got himself a tractor. He is 4 months old today and I am almost 67. You can see I just about missed out.

Thanks again. Paul Davidson

My guess is the needle and set are not doing their job. A needle seat needs to tight and the only way your are going to get it tight is to have or make a screwdriver that will fit both slots in the seat. I can not see were the fuel is a issue. For those that plan on rebuild’n your carb take a old file and grind the end to fit slots in the seat then take a adjustable wrench install it on the file neer the seat and tighten it good. This will repair 99% of your fuel leakage problems.

If you decide to turn the gas off, and let it die of starvation, don't forget to turn the key off too. I'ffn you don't you may burn up your points and coil. Don't ask how I know. Steve 8N I69302

Hi Paul -

"He said start the tractor first then turn on the gas. and before you shut it down turn the gas off."

Don't think you will get it to start with a dry carb. I agree with turning it off before shutting it down, but the next time you try to start you will have to turn the gas on first.

Good luck with your tractor.

Mike OH;

Your right about that. I'll have to get a clarafication on that step. I don't think he meant for me to let the motor die out befor shutting down. I think he meant doing it this way would prevent gas from flowing should the needle valve not be seated properly.
